Trump Administration Says Health Insurance Move Will Save $12 Billion

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced it is in the final stages of implementing a new rule that it says will "lower individual health insurance premiums" by 5 percent on average. CMS said the move is expected to save American taxpayers up to $12 billion in 2026, by "combating the surge of improper enrollments in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Exchanges."
Concern has been raised by some that these new measures will push many Americans off their health coverage. "They will indeed save government money, but only by throwing off the ACA rolls millions of individuals who deserve to be on," Jonathan Gruber, a professor of economics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, told Newsweek. Newsweek has contacted CMS via email for comment.
Why It Matters
According to a CMS release, the new rules are being brought in to tackle "waste, fraud and abuse" in health insurance marketsan issue that is at the forefront of the Trump administration's policies. A Government Accountability Office (GAO) report from 2024 found that $100 billion was discovered in "improper payments" in 2023 across the Medicare and Medicaid programs.
While wasteful spending in health insurance markets has been targeted by the administration to lower the tax burden for Americans, critics are concerned that sweeping cuts and changes will only push many off health coverage, subsequently driving up costs in the long-term.

More premature disability and death means more Social Security benefits paid to the disabled and survivors.

(20,952 posts)If they have to pay SSDI to someone who's become permanently disabled, rather than keeping them healthy and working, paying taxes, that's a cost.
If someone dies while they have a dependent spouse and/or children, that's a cost.

Besides, corporations and their officers make donations to campaigns; big donations.

How about run program and then claim savings.....they never have saved the amount they claim...never. Why do they get away with it? What would actual health care cost...forget insurance...just cover everyone for everything no charge....big savings. and Free parking at the hospital.

Additional actions being made by CMS in regard to ACA Exchanges include a move to ensure federal ACA subsidies will no longer be available "to help cover the cost of specified sex-trait modification procedures to align an individual's physical appearance or body with an asserted identity that differs from the individual's sex."
If you know a trans person who gets care through the ACA exchange, please warn them so they can reach out to their healthcare provider.

(1,716 posts)fucking again, especially now that they're starting yet another fucking pointless war in the Middle East EVERYONE is going to pay for...and as a direct result of their idiotic actions, Hormuz is going to be closed to boot, exacerbating the situation even further. Because all of the tariffs and mindless firing/defunding of government agencies wasn't enough.
Fuck the GOP and anyone who still supports it for any fucking reason.

(665 posts)It's a win for the government -- the dead don't need medicaid or food stamps or housing subsidies or disability payments.
So if they can prune away the poor, what is left is people who don't require help. God knows what will happen when AI takes a bunch of jobs away. I guess it will be time for more pruning.
It significantly angers me that poor people do not have healthcare, good educations (since that is funded by property taxes), nutritious food, daycare, jobs that pay a living wage, and decent housing. I think that leveling the playing field would benefit all of us.
Instead we have Greed running the show, vast protections in place for the very wealthy, corrupt elections (financing and gerrymandering and billionaires and large corporations running the show), huge undue influence of lobbyists, elected representatives that seem to be very corrupt, and very little of evidence of having a government that is of the people, by the people, and for the people. I think we would be better off with a pure democracy. I think we'd be better off if running for election were not so expensive, if Citizens United had not been wrongly decided, if the electoral college were abolished, if many politicians, corporations, and wealthy people were not corrupt, and if so many old white men were not in positions of power.
I have more to say, but this would turn into a Super Rant.
