US urges China to dissuade Iran from closing Strait of Hormuz

Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON, June 22 (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday called on China to encourage Iran to not shut down the Strait of Hormuz after Washington carried out strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

Rubio's comments on Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo" show came after Iran's Press TV reported that the Iranian parliament approved a measure to close the Strait of Hormuz, through which around 20% of global oil and gas flows.

"I encourage the Chinese government in Beijing to call them about that, because they heavily depend on the Straits of Hormuz for their oil," said Rubio, who also serves as national security adviser.

"If they do that, it will be another terrible mistake. It's economic suicide for them if they do it. And we retain options to deal with that, but other countries should be looking at that as well. It would hurt other countries' economies a lot worse than ours."

China you may suffer because of trumps action so it is important that you deal with the repercussions. As you know by now trump breaks things and causes problems. He fixes nothing and cares not for the harm he causes. He embodies conservative values. Thank You for your assistance, or else.

Hey repugs, you can't bomb a country and tell them
not to respond. All they had to do was leave the
agreement we already had with Iran and their nuke program !

China has a big interest in Iran, buying 90% of their oil exports at below market prices due to the sanctions.

This is the US saying "Iran, your threats to cut off your key customer, a geopolitical rival to America, are toothless." Iran would be counting on everyone being mad at us, as if Iran has no choice but to blockade the persian gulf.

You can see it in the tone of Rubio's statement. "That sounds like a You problem."

17. About the Strait
Sun Jun 22, 2025, 02:17 PM

The Iranian Parliament has reportedly ordered the Strait of Hormuz to be closed. The Parliament left the final decision to Iran’s national leadership.

Google Strait of Hormuz and look at the map. The Strait is one of the points that Alfred Thayer Mahan referred to as “the narrow seas” – choke points through which pass critical shipping and that can be closed with relatively little effort by the states bordering the “narrow seas.”

One-third of the world’s supply of liquified natural gas (LNG) and 20-25% of the world’s petroleum pass through the Strait.

Iran sits on one side of the strait while Oman and the UAE are on the other side. With drones and shore-to-ship missiles, Iran can close or all but close the strait to shipping.

One can argue that closing the Strait would shut down Iran’s economy because the petroleum passing through the Strait brings in A LOT OF MONEY to Iran. However, war tends to override good sense and Iran’s leadership may figure their population can do without the income longer than the West and China can do without LNG and oil. Closure of the Strait would cause US petroleum prices to spike to levels we have never before seen.

Will Iran try to close the Strait? That’s for them to decide. Last week, all US naval vessels were ordered out of the Persian Gulf so they would not be trapped if the Strait were closed.

Things get complicated when we get past eighteen. And for people whose mental age is around 14 . . . Hegseth, Trump, Miller, Gabbard . . .

I suspect Trump, Hegseth, Miller, Gabbard do not know who Alfred Thayer Mahan is. Not surprising – MAGAts tend to be ignorant of the important stuff.

I get a kick out of Rubio manspaining Chiina on why they should get Iran to keep the oil flowing.

The winner so far is Putin as the price of oil rises. Zelenskyy pointed this out last week as a likely results of bombing Iran

China imports 90% of Iran's cheap oil... Iran may want something more in return to maintain this relationship.

I hope young MAGA voters are happy when they start getting drafted!

You have now been reduced to begging China for a favor. An assessment of the situation will conclude that your begging request is not, for many reasons, in China's favor. I wouldn't hold my breath on this one. Toodles for now!
