Procter & Gamble to cut 7,000 jobs, exit brands as consumer uncertainty weighs
Source: Reuters
Procter & Gamble (PG.N), will cut 7,000 jobs over the next two years, as the Tide detergent maker contends with an uncertain spending environment, fueled in part by U.S. tariffs that have roiled numerous consumer companies.
The job cuts amount to about 6% of its workforce, which P&G characterized as part of its ongoing strategy.
Notably, CFO Andre Schulten and operations head Shailesh Jejurikar said at the conference that the geopolitical environment was "unpredictable" and that consumers were facing "greater uncertainty."
President Donald Trump's sweeping levies on trading partners have shaken global markets and sparked concerns of a recession in the United States.

(4,659 posts)...they could sell more. We just stopped using big corporate brands as much as possible-- too much cost (a lot of which buys their expensive advertising and top exec salaries not product ingredients and worker wages); too much plastic/packaging and frequently can use a lot less than their packaging recommends and still get good results. Maybe more folks are thinking this way and big brands are downsizing accordingly.

(8,116 posts)They sold off a lot of pieces, and the number of employees is now about 108,000, prior to this cut.

(56 posts)Tide was designed by P&G chemists in the 40s or 50s (I can't recall exactly when) to be effective in washing machines. It had large amounts of phosphates, which of course got into our streams and rivers. The subsequent eutrophication was a disaster for these waterbodies. Ecologists proved that phosphorus contamination was the cause of the eutrophication problem and their was a campaign to remove the phosphorus from Tide and detergents like it. P&G fought that tooth and nail, but eventually lost.

(764 posts)It was too expensive when I first started out on my own. Too expensive when I worked, and too expensive upon retirement. Spend wisely.
I didn't want to work forever so one place I saved was laundry detergent.

(916 posts)that Costco's Kirkland brand was as good as, if not better than, Tide. I bought her a big tub of the powder and she loved it, so I bought a tub for myself. It seemed to do the job, but every time I opened the tub, the dust would fly up my nose and down my throat, resulting in a coughing fit, so I went back to Tide. I haven't tried the pods or liquid.

(25,681 posts)I had a job in my senior move management that I had to clear out a house and there was a big box of unused Tide pods. I took them home and saved them until I ran out of the Kirkland ones. They are the same items basically. Im almost run out of my freebie Tide pods and will buy the Kirkland brand when I go to Costco next time!
