DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) An overnight Israeli strike on a school-turned-shelter in Gaza City killed 23 people, as Arab mediators worked on a proposal to end the war with Hamas that would include a five to seven year truce and the release of all remaining hostages, officials said Wednesday.
There was no immediate Israeli comment on the strike, which set several tents ablaze, burning people alive. The military says it only targets militants and blames civilian deaths on Hamas because its fighters are embedded in densely populated areas.
France, Germany and Britain meanwhile said Israels seven-week-old blockade on all imports to Gaza, including food, was intolerable, in unusually strong criticism from three of the countrys closest allies.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called on Hamas to release the hostages in order to block Israels pretexts for continuing the war. He reiterated his demands that Hamas give up their arms, referring to them as sons of dogs in unusually strong language during a speech in the West Bank.

(699 posts)Yes we know HAMAS is a monster
But this is blatant targeting of civilians and emergency personnel
How does that make Israel any better?
The have the much greater body count and suffering applied.
Why aren't Jews/Israelis speaking out against this?
Why isn't Israel going after the nations/leaders of HAMAS?
Why is the U.S. not putting a stop to their feeding of this violent machine?

(12,010 posts)"Yes we know HAMAS is a monster"
- So why not go into what makes Hamas such a monster? A lot of your questions would become self-evident just by taking this step alone.
"How does that make Israel any better?"
- The right of self-defense, for one. No state in the world would act differently against these monsters. The body count and suffering are in the hands of Hamas. They chose, employed and bragged about their tactics deliberately purposed to achieve the highest possible casualty rates among civilians, bragging at length about the the benefits they brought to Hamas and calling for more civilian casualties. Hamas is in full control ofr reducing and increasing these casualties, and they consistently choose the latter. Which, of course is exactly what makes them such monsters, but which for some inexplicable reason is never mentioned with any degree of specificity, an omission that obfuscates their responsibility for causing "the much greater body count and suffering applied". More on how this makes Israel better later.
"Why isn't Israel going after the nations/leaders of HAMAS? "
-They are. But Hamas leaders made it a routine practice (see above) to hide themselves, their military assets and their resources among their civilians, purposely positoning the said civilians in harm's way instead of getting them out of harm's way, in violation of a commandment imposed on Hamas as their rulers by every international law and humanitarian standard in existence.
"But this is blatant targeting of civilians and emergency personnel"
- No it is not. See Articles 28 and 29 of the Fourth Geneva Convention (https://www.un.org/en/genocideprevention/documents/atrocity-crimes/Doc.33_GC-IV-EN.pdf). According to all international criminal law, "targeting" presumes intent to civilians and medical personnel, and it is on the accuser to prove intent. Unless it is proven, it remains an allegation.
"Why aren't Jews/Israelis speaking out against this?"
-They are. By the tens of thousands on a weekly basis in Israel alone. Not only are they speaking out against the aforementioned monsters that are still holding their neighbors and relatives hostage (an abomination condemned by every humanitarian law and ethical and religious doctrine in existence), but against their government. Another rather obvious thing that makes Israel better.
"Why is the U.S. not putting a stop to their feeding of this violent machine? "
- Look up what is happening in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Iran, in addition to Gaza, and not just from Israel's perspective of risking total annihilation, but American interests in the region and how they line up with a well-armed Israel.

(36,378 posts)Israelis ARE speaking out against these attacks - in regular demonstrations. Read the Israeli press: Haaretz and Time of Israel.
The IDF is going after Hamas leaders. They have been all along. But 18 months in, targets are becoming harder to find. Maybe this attack was targeting a leader of Hamas. We have no idea.
The US isn't "putting a stop" to their "feeding of this violent machine" because TRUMP IS PRESIDENT.
Good grief.

(7,090 posts)when a little girl burned to death. Remember when it was said over and over that this would all end if they just released all of the hostages? Well Netanyahu recently rejected the offer to release all of the hostages in exchange for ending the war. So if you are one of those families who he promised that the hostages were his top priority how can you believe anything from him now? Those families have every right to hate both sides.

(4,675 posts)No other reason to kill women and children, health workers, food delivery workers. This is to help trump with conservative factions here in the US. It divides us and trump wants to destroy our free-thinking institutions. The stupid, cult gullibles here are just pawns to all of this. *i.e.- CBS news

They weren't NEW conditions. They merely proposed ALL hostages and bodies.

(7,090 posts)all of the hostages, including bodies, along with an end to the war was made after Israel terminated the latest ceasefire. My point before was that so many people who comment about the tragedy including Israeli politicians have said all along that the attack would stop if they released all of the hostages. This obviously can now be seen as having not been a true statement since Netanyahu has said he will not stop no matter whether hostages are released or not. His photo op where he marched out to the sea should have been all anybody needed to see in order to stop with the nonsense of making statements that it would all be over if Hamas released all of the hostages and bodies.
