Trump's "final offer" for peace requires Ukraine to accept Russian occupation
Source: axios
The U.S. expects Ukraine's response Wednesday to a peace framework that includes U.S. recognition of Crimea as part of Russia and unofficial recognition of Russian control of nearly all areas occupied since the 2022 invasion, sources with direct knowledge of the proposal tell Axios.
Why it matters: The one-page document the U.S. presented Ukrainian officials in Paris last week describes this as President Trump's "final offer." The White House insists it's ready to walk away if the parties don't make a deal soon.
Trump's proposal would require major concessions from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who previously ruled out accepting Russia's occupation of Crimea and parts of four regions in eastern Ukraine.
And while Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly offered to freeze the current front lines in order to reach a deal, he has previously rejected other elements of the U.S. framework, such as a European peacekeeping force on Ukrainian territory.
A source close to the Ukrainian government said Kyiv sees the proposal as highly biased towards Russia: "The proposal says very clearly what tangible gains Russia gets, but only vaguely and generally says what Ukraine is going to get."...............

(75,144 posts)What's next: Witkoff will travel to Moscow later this week for his fourth meeting with Putin, the White House announced Tuesday.
But Witkoff and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are both expected to skip talks in London on Wednesday involving U.S., Ukrainian, French, German and U.K. officials. Both had previously planned to attend.
Instead, Ukraine envoy Keith Kellogg is expected to lead the U.S. delegation. The U.S. proposal is expected to be part of the discussions.

(103,477 posts)Weve issued a very explicit proposal to both the Russians and the Ukrainians, and its time for them to either say yes, or for the United States to walk away from this process, Vance told reporters in India, where he is on a four-day visit.
...
Its now time, I think, to take, if not the final step, one of the final steps, which is, at a broad level, the party saying were going to stop the killing, were going to freeze the territorial lines at some level close to where they are today, Vance added.
Now, of course, that means the Ukrainians and the Russians are both going to have to give up some of the territory they currently own, he added.

"Both ... give up some of the territory they currently own" is doing a lot of work there. Vance/Trump/whoever is not asking Russia to "give up" a single bit of Russia as internationally recognised; the only movement of the front line towards Russia mentioned is "the return of the small part of Kharkiv oblast Russia has occupied", which is, of course, not "owned". Russia get to control everything else it has invaded, and gets US recognition of Crimea as part of Russia.
I presume "walk away from this process" is a threat to withdraw all US military support from Ukraine. Because if it was just "the US won't try and make a deal anymore", it wouldn't be much of a threat, would it? More like a relief that the biased and out-of-their-depth US "negotiators" would stop wasting people's time.

BTW: Russia is losing.
1). They are running out of vehicles to transport troops they have been using horses,
motorcycles, scooters, and walking to move their forces into battle and Ukrainian drones
are slaughtering them.

B). Battle hardened Columbian troops are now in country and they are thrashing Russian
and North Korean troops. One Columbian officer said that Ukrainian drones are cleaning out
and spotting enemy forces before they are deployed.

When the hammer of justice falls on Trump, I hope he remains the coward that he is but does not go out like Hitler, rather gets captured like Saddam and goes out the same goddamn way.

(4,626 posts)He wants to frame the narrative, as he has been doing all along, that Ukraine is the cause of the war and the reason there is no peace. Ukraine won't submit and give up land to psychopaths who invaded their country ? Well then, we'll just walk away because Ukraine is unreasonable. Victim blaming and victim shaming. Innocent Ukrainians are dying every day. This is a shame on the United States.

I feel like his cult members know this, and that we fall into his trap by believing that his spoken words are supposed to mean anything.
The question that just constantly shadows my psyche though is how is it possible that Democrats can't make more political headway on the fact that his proclamations are such obvious sacks of feces? We are a long way down the road from his boast that Mexico would pay to build the border wall to keep people out of the U.S.; and obviously we do not have a shiny new healthcare system. Yet every new boast is met with some perception that he really means it.
It is not solely the fault of the press--although good arguments can be made in that area. Political reality is formed through so many factors: social media; memes; press coverage; public perception; word of mouth. Why do his lies seem to always ascend and never create fallout? Are we simply witnessing the work of one of the greatest con-artists in history?
