Key piece of Trump administration plan to expand migrant detention space appears to have fallen through

A key piece of the Trump administration’s plan to rapidly expand immigration detention capacity by tens of thousands of beds appears to have fallen through, according to two sources and a government contracting document reviewed by NBC News.

Facing a shortage of immigration detention space, President Donald Trump first announced he would add 30,000 beds for immigrants at Guantánamo Bay, the U.S. naval base in Cuba. When that plan fell through over cost and logistical issues, the plan shifted to Fort Bliss, a military base in Texas, to build a sprawling tent city for immigrants to be held before deportation.

A $3.8 billion contract was awarded to Deployed Resources, a contractor that has previously provided toilets and tents for concertgoers, victims of natural disasters and, more recently, migrants who were briefly detained and processed by Border Patrol.

But last week, new language appeared on the Deployed Resources contract posted to a public records database that says it was terminated. The document says it was terminated "for convenience" and cites Trump’s executive order about “radical transparency" and "wasteful spending,” but it is unclear whether cost savings played into the decision. Representatives for Deployed Resources did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

1. As with everything Trump, he has more appetite than resources and know how. Actually a good thing here.

Short of a major hiring or contracting surge for ICE etc., Fed people power is seriously limiting the ability to find, arrest, detain and deport immigrants in enough numbers to put a serious dent in the 11 million people Trump always says is the number. Last I calculated it, at current rate of the round-up, it will take them 36 years and that assumes no more folks are overstaying visas and such. While folks, some clearly innocent, are getting rounded up, it is largely a show for the MAGA base rather than an effective effort that can be sustained and succeed. Sort of surprised that MSM is not taunting Trump on this fact that the effort is hardly making a dent. Hmmm, he is not really fixing illegal immigrant situation, hasn't reversed or lowered inflation, has not achieved peace in Ukraine, Gaza or Yemen or balanced the budget and reduced the national debt. Just a blustering wannabe clown.

When has the republican owned/operated MSM ever taunted the republicans. Hell...they're all trying to say this is all the fault of "one man". That, in itself, is cover for the republican party, and all of its hideous members.

They did early on but they characterized it in a more "polite" way by saying that 45's administration had deported far fewer than the Biden administration. They had those types of articles over a couple months and then shifted focus as soon as the "quota" renditions began to happen, including of those who were here legally, which allowed for more "dramatic" reporting.

11. You wouldn't think basic analytical calculations would be that hard but apparently all facts are hard.

Very disappointing but I am getting used to it. How many punches can your pull as MSM and not just become irrelevant?

I would speculate that it is the driving factor in the growing stories of ICE abusing people who are attempting to enter legally. The admin is putting HEAVY pressure on ICE to increase apprehensions and deportations. ICE knows they don't have the time and resources to hit the Trump Junta's numbers, so they are going after the "low hanging fruit" to pad their numbers. So we wind up hearing stories of 18 year old recent high school grads from Germany who are traveling the world on a budget and get detained, strip searched, full body scanned, placed in prison jump suits and detained for hours before being denied entry and deported. Their offense? They didn't book a hotel room and that seemed suspicious to ICE.

including from legit immigration outlets, estimate about 11 million undocumented in the U.S. However if you do a search, that SAME number goes back to at least 2012, so they probably have no clue.

The legit sources attempt to get that info from the Census surveys coupled with other data, but that community is often transient too, with some even traveling back and forth between their birth countries and here.
