Elon Musk says he's stepping back from DOGE

Source: Business Insider

Apr 22, 2025, 5:44 PM ET

Elon Musk has announced he will step back from the White House DOGE office after spending three months trying to radically reshape the federal government and its workforce. "Starting next month, I will be allocating far more of my time to Tesla," he said, "now that the major work of establishing the Department of Government Efficiency" is done, Musk said in Tuesday's earnings call.

He said he'll continue to spend a day or two a week on government matters, "as long as it is useful," and the president wants him to do so. Musk's announcement comes on the heels of Tesla's disappointing quarterly earnings report Tuesday.

Under Musk's unofficial leadership, DOGE has targeted a wide swath of federal agencies, including dismantling the US Agency for International Development, attempting to gain access to sensitive data and payment systems at the Internal Revenue Service and Treasury Department, and trying to shut down the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Musk has also helped Trump gut the federal workforce through buyout offers to government employees, mass firings of probationary workers, and downsizing of agencies like the National Institutes of Health.

Despite its large-scale targeting of federal agencies and workers, DOGE has not come close to its savings goals. Musk first promised that his sweeping DOGE cuts would save taxpayers $2 trillion, but later downgraded that to $1 trillion, and further again to $150 billion, DOGE's claimed savings have been riddled with mistakes and corrections, including removing $4 billion from its "Wall of Receipts" in March, dropping its real estate savings by $150 million later that month, and lowering its savings claims by over $9 billion over two days in February.

clearly the point was not reducing the cost of government. We know this because, despite the cruel and ridiculous firings, the government is costing more.

So Musk has all the data and now he doesn't need the DOGE fig leaf any more.

SCOTUS being the real problem there. Everywhere else the unlawful firings could be stopped.

The current stay by SCOTUS makes it harder for workers and agencies to recover even if we win, and it implies they'll rule against us in the end after every other court rules for us.

He should be forced to "step back" immediately -- a.k.a. fired -- and someone needs to start repairing the damage, ASAP. I hate to see the bastard get away with all the illegal things he did, and I wonder why people who get hurt can't sue him personally.

but for his switch from Democrats to Trump. Oh, i forgot about all the investigations into his business practices.
I guess he needed DOGE to quash all of those.

The country and the world are just collateral damage for 2 businessmen too greedy to make money honestly and who needed to wield power over the whole federal government to save themselves from prosecution.

the past doesn't have to be the future. People are waking up to the stakes.
If Smith had been allowed to prosecute the documents case Trump would have been toast. The NLRB whistleblower could lead to more whistleblowers, plus investigations. If courts won't address this, or fast enough, journalists need to.

What is the B.T.B.?

Musk is permanently hitched to Trump's cart now. If Trump fails, investigations of Musk's companies resume, his government contracts end, and Tesla is already toast. He doesn't have a cult or an army of Brownshirts to protect him like Trump does. Lots of MAGAs actually hate him too. SCOTUS likely won't protect him either. And everyone who aligns themselves to Trump gets thrown under the bus at some point.
