Trump looking at cutting US drug prices to international levels, sources say

Source: Reuters

Drugmakers have been warned that the Trump Administration is considering linking U.S. medicine prices to lower amounts paid by other developed countries, according to two company sources who called the option the pharmaceutical industry's top concern.

Both sources, who were not authorized to speak publicly, said they expected the policy to come from the agency that oversees Medicare and Medicaid health programs.

The first source said he had been told directly by government health officials that they were exploring such a policy, which he described as a mid-level priority for the Trump Administration as it tries to lower drug prices.

The two sources said any such policy was more concerning to the industry than other government moves under discussion, which include tariffs on imported medicines. The first source said it is the biggest "existential threat to the industry and U.S. biosciences innovation."

This sounds too good to be true, it's probably more likely that Comrade Krasnov is preparing to shake down the drug industry.

6. Why should the US shoulder the burden of paying for all the R&D?

You sound like your complaining that big pharma wont be able to fleece the the US system for tons of money. Again why should US patients and insurance companies shoulder the burden of all the costs for the R&D of medicines?

U.S. consumers spend roughly three times as much on drugs as their European counterparts, and 90 percent more as a share of income. Calculations using publicly available aggregate data suggest that the United States market accounts for 64 to 78 percent of worldwide pharmaceutical profits. These profits drive drug innovation that ultimately benefits patients around the globe. While American subsidies to innovation provide much-needed philanthropy to poor countries, patients in richer countries outside the United States would benefit longer-term if they financed a greater share of drug discovery. Using a previously published economic-demographic microsimulation, we estimate that if European prices were 20 percent higher, the resulting increased innovation would generate $10 trillion in welfare gains for Americans, and $7.5 trillion for Europeans over the next 50 years. Encouraging other wealthy countries to shoulder more of the burden of drug discovery — including higher prices for innovative treatments — would ultimately benefit patients in the United States and the rest of the world. People complain that health care costs are too high in this country, medicine prices greatly add to that cost. My 78 yo mother pays about 200 bucks a month in co pays for her medicines, and thats with a state retirement health care system. Her state pension is 800 bucks.

Every time I hear the pharmaceutical industry argument about "R&D" it makes my blood boil. People need to stop falling for the propaganda and repeating their lies.

... to lower prices in Big Pharma. We're supposed to believe that he cares now? Hardly. He's just waiting for the pharm execs to all stand in line and smoochy-smoochy. As soon as he figures out how to collect $ from them, it's all over.

Supposedly he can't run for office again, so there's no asking for "campaign fund donations."

I don't know ... Maybe he'll ask them to donate to his "favorite charity."

Hey, the Big Law firms and prominent universities forked over billions of dollars with barely a whimper---wouldn't want the pharmaceutical industry to be treated any differently, now would we?

Can't wait to see how much money trump makes off his second time as prez. As usual, he's making virtually no effort whatsoever to hide what he's doing---that's just what happens, when you're blessed with an essentially impotent political opposition.
