Robert F. Kennedy Jr. suggests compensating families of some people with autism

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. - who has long spread debunked claims surrounding autism and vaccines − suggested compensating families of some Americans with autism, calling them "injured."
"Bottom line, the more than 25% of people who have severe autism will never go on a date, write a poem, live independently, or have a job," Kennedy said in an April 18 social media post. "We need to identify the exposures that are causing this epidemic and compensate the families of the injured." USA TODAY has reached out to the Department of Health and Human Services for more information.
The post comes after Kennedy during his first official press conference on April 16 said that some kids diagnosed with autism will "never play baseball" or "write a poem." "Theyll never go out on a date," he continued. "Many of them will never use a toilet unassisted."
Though some applauded Kennedy's push for answers, the comments drew wide-reaching accusations of ableism from many Americans with autism, their loved ones and advocacy groups. Autism spectrum disorder is diagnosed based on challenges with social skills, communication and repetitive behaviors. It is a spectrum, meaning symptoms vary widely, with a percentage unable to communicate at all and others highly successful in some areas of life.

(109,236 posts)His horrendous, contemptuous attitude toward autistic children and adults--his willful ignorance and near eugenics-level approach to people with conditions, illnesses, and disabilities shock the damned hell out of me. Especially so, given the late Eunice Shriver Kennedy's work for disabled people with Special Olympics.
But, I'm guessing a bigger influence (beyond his neurocysticercosis- and methyl mercury-addled brain ideology) is Trump's own sadistic attitudes-- completely evidenced by the story of his attempts to cut off agreed-upon medical care from a Trump Sr. Trust set up for the son of Donald's nephew--who is severely disabled since birth and nonverbal. This is the now 25-year-old son of Fred Trump III (Mary's brother).
How many steps from where we are now to the NAZI medical approach, including "ridding" society of the sick and disabled and experimenting on others involuntarily...?
And no, for those who think I engage in hyperbole, I do not believe he is serious about $$ help to families of autistic children. Someone has pointed out how horrific his earlier ignorant comments (perhaps even his own wife) and he's flailingly trying to respond. Under Trump, unless RFK Jr is truly a nonthinking mass of protoplasm, he HAS to know that these kids will not even get educational assistance, given the destruction of the Department of Education and its aid to such children. Nor will they get the medical care they (and other children) will need.
I think his ignorance either promotes or will passively allow for an eugenic approach to those with disabilities. And THAT truly IS a Nazi approach. He will do NOTHING to combat the Stephen Millers and other actively psychopathic figures in the administration, but rather enable them, actively or passively, through his ignorance.
May the families of these children and all others who CARE, be aware, wary, and active against these monsters. Do not believe their pandering comments. Believe what they say when the heat is NOT on them--and what they have already shown they are willing to DO!

(9,671 posts)Kennedy had 10% of the vote in the primary in some states and Trump needed that 10%. Childrens Health Defence which Kennedy ran for 8 yrs has millions of moms with autistic kids so he has a huge following. On X- the moms of severely autistic kids post a lot.
People want to gaslight us into believing this is a gift. This is the reality of many parents in the US with severe autistic children. A teen of his size can easily kill her. What happens to him when she dies? Whos going to look after these children?

(17,989 posts)take a shot to be cured either. If I was to be able to take a shot and be cured of my life that I have managed for over 77 years to navigate and become a different person (which I would). Ain't no way Jose.

(9,671 posts)With his River Keepers - moms of autistic kids who believed the mercury in vaccines & teeth at that time might be contributing to their kids autism started contacting him and wanted him to look into the mercury in vaccines. In 2007, the World Mercury Party was started to address concerns- that Party turned e intoChildrens Health Defense and soon was mostly made up of moms of kids with severe autism - He was chairman of CHD for 8 yrs. CHD has millions of moms of autistic kids as members which is how Kennedy was able to get 10% in many states while running in the primary. CHD moms put out many podcasts on social media and have a bus that travels the US talking with moms of autistic kids all over the US.
He said some of his kids have bad allergies and that kids allergies are also increasing. He said he never really knew much about autism - but because of his work cleaning up mercury in rivers - the moms came to his door and said they would not leave until he agreed to look into mercury in their kids.

(9,671 posts)I dont know what the income cutoff level is. Maybe he can raise the cutoff. Many severely autistic kids have to move to group homes as they get older because their acting out has often injured their siblings and others. I dont know who pays for their care in these homes.
