VATICAN CITY (AP) Pope Francis, historys first Latin American pontiff who charmed the world with his humble style and concern for the poor but alienated conservatives with critiques of capitalism and climate change, died Monday. He was 88.
Bells tolled in church towers across Rome after the announcement, which was read out by Cardinal Kevin Farrell from the chapel of the Domus Santa Marta, where Francis lived.
At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church, said Farrell, the Vatican camerlengo, who takes charge after a pontiffs death.
Francis, who suffered from chronic lung disease and had part of one lung removed as a young man, was admitted to Gemelli hospital on Feb. 14, 2025, for a respiratory crisis that developed into double pneumonia. He spent 38 days there, the longest hospitalization of his 12-year papacy.
He made his last public appearance on Easter Sunday a day before his death to bless thousands of people in St. Peters Square, drawing wild cheers and applause. Beforehand, he met briefly with U.S. Vice President JD Vance.

But he emerged on Easter Sunday -- his last public appearance, a day before his death -- to bless thousands of people in St. Peter's Square and treat them to a surprise popemobile romp through the piazza, drawing wild cheers and applause. Beforehand, he met briefly with U.S. Vice President JD Vance.

From his first greeting as pope -- a remarkably normal "Buonasera" ("Good evening" ) -- to his embrace of refugees and the downtrodden, Francis signaled a very different tone for the papacy, stressing humility over hubris for a Catholic Church beset by scandal and accusations of indifference.
After that rainy night on March 13, 2013, the Argentine-born Jorge Mario Bergoglio brought a breath of fresh air into a 2,000-year-old institution that had seen its influence wane during the troubled tenure of Pope Benedict XVI, whose surprise resignation led to Francis' election.

(151,125 posts)I see this happen the most on USA Today articles that often use an "em dash" (long dash) that DU's software can't render. Similarly something happens with certain types of double quote marks (there are some that are actually "directional" - leaning right or leaning left).

(103,478 posts)If you visit the AP article, you'll see it's a closing double quotation mark. This has a Unicode value above 256 (8221 in this case), and DU doesn't always deal with these well - sometimes because they may be used for SQL attacks (though I don't think that's the case here). Squint carefully, and you'll see the difference between the purely-vertical double quotation mark that can be used for opening and closing, which you can get from your keyboard:
"
and the opening and closing ones:

Two thirds of the eligible members of the College of Cardinals (all those under the age of 80) were appointed by Francis.
BumRushDaShow
(151,125 posts)and of the current compliment of Cardinals (not necessarily appointed by him), at least as of his last set of selections this past December, only 8 are Jesuit. However he has definitely emphasized selecting Cardinals from the many "orders", so will have to see.
I expect there were a range of perspectives for those who he appointed and probably many who would align with his worldview... But like everything else in a church or government or large organization, there is always "politics" involved and jockeying for power (I know the book/miniseries "The Thorn Birds" showed that! ).

(3,322 posts)I gave up Catholicism for Lent several years ago, and it kinda stuck, but I still feel an affinity for the less conservative communities within the Roman Catholic Church. Part of my decision to pull back was the openly political ambitions of Catholic Bishops and Archbishops in the US, which were all decidedly right of center, but Francis demonstrated that Catholics like the version of me that was active in the church can still be a force for good.
I became a liberal in part because I read the Gospels and Acts of the Apostles.

(58 posts)The neocons tried to make JPII into a divine pope (John Paul II the Greatest) because the Catholic Church was used to elect Republicans and because of the role of JPII in defeating the Washington enemy of the USSR. If you work with Reagan and the Republicans for Washington Republican cia agenda, then the media promote viewers to support you.
If you are a pope critical of Trump, the media focuses on how you are a controversial pope of the poor.
EWTN News, financed by cia shell groups, secretly hated Pope Francis.
Pope Francis responds to attacks from EWTN, other church critics: They are the work of the devil.

Francis was arguably the most liberal pope (by Roman Catholic standards) ever to hold the position. Libbing-up the world's Roman Catholics in opposition to the Trump agenda was a very real possibility.
I'm not saying that a chemical agent was discretely delivered to a compromised pope by a foreign official in the room. But, I wonder what a detailed toxicology report on Francis would show?
Again, I'm not suggesting this happened. But, is it a possibility? If a lib VP met a conservative pope in person, and that pope died within 24-hours, you just know that right-wing blogosphere would be lit up like a Christmas tree.

I am a Catholic and won't accept the next pope, nor the organization from the Vatican.
I believed Pope Francis was too pro-Trump. The next anti-pope is going to be servant to Little Nero in Washington, will neither defend the defenseless nor the poor.
The Vatican of the next pope is going to accept payment in donations with money backed by bitcoin or trumpcoins or other 666 technology money.
The next pope - acceptance to Putin or Trump or bitcoin in refusing to take sides or positions. A wishy-washy pope of co-existence with evil. With abortion returning as the only "evil" of the Catholic Church. You are to be a single issue voter: abortion.
Rome was filled with abortions and gays. There were Jewish prostitutes that committed abortion during the era of Jesus. Mary Magdalene was labeled a Jewish prostitute by Pope Gregory, although many disagree she was the repentant woman. There was gay stuff in Rome for centuries. If Jesus wanted to, Jesus could have preached against gays and abortion 24/7.
Worse was what was tolerated, since Jesus was God, Jesus knew this was happening:
Tiberius had a scandalous reputation. He was a sexual predator (Dio, 58.22) who used his power to secure access to girls and boys. Dio parallels his moral failings with his strict enforcement of moral disciplines upon others.
https://ancientromanhistory31-14.com/home/tiberius/sex-and-the-emperor/
Namely, he trained several-year-old boys to play "fishes". Tiberius went into the water naked, and young boys dived around him and teased his thighs and phallus with teeth. The fun did not only end with biting, but also sucking on the penis of the ruler.
https://imperiumromanum.pl/en/curiosities/perversions-of-emperor-tiberius-on-capri/
Jesus never mentioned abortion, nor gays. The reference of millstone was about corrupting believers, which is what MTG and Trump do to believers.
