Senior Republican flounders when asked about Trump plan to deport US citizens to foreign jails

A CNN anchor grilled a top-ranking House Republican on Sunday over whether Congress would sit by and allow the Trump administration to continue with its mass deportation strategy if American citizens started being targeted.

Though it’s illegal to deport US citizens, President Donald Trump has raised the possibility on several occasions in recent weeks. During a White House visit with El Salvador’s president Nayib Bukele last week, the US commander-in-chief urged the leader of a Central American country — with the cameras rolling — to expand a notorious mega-prison used to house gang members and other hardened criminals in order to house Americans.

In other instances, Trump has proposed such a punishment for demonstrators who vandalise or commit arson at Tesla dealerships over the left’s anger with its CEO, Elon Musk.

On Sunday, CNN’s Dana Bash interviewed House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, the third-highest ranking Republican in the House of Representatives. She pressed Emmer repeatedly over whether he, in his capacity as an attorney as well as a lawmaker, believed that Trump had the legal or constitutional authority to deport American citizens if they were convicted of violent crimes.

...reflect light in the frequency we call blue?" I wish these dim-witted reporters would skip to the harder questions and bypass these silly ones that they know the Republican in question will easily sidestep.

In this case the question should not be about authority or anything else, but what happens to the due-process afforded to every American citizen (and yes, everyone, but here we are) once they are deported to a foreign country? Just because you have been convicted of a crime and sentenced does not remove your right to petition the courts on issues related to your case--even when you have technically run out of appeals since new information could always arise that needs to be considered by the court. And the cases they claim they want to send to other countries are likely some of the most complicated and consequential. Believe it or not: a murder case is infinitely more complicated to argue than a traffic violation.

The next question--since presumably they can not defend the loss of due process--is how does that look? Do we fly them back and forth for every court date? Do we have virtual courts? Do we set up a U.S. court in El Salvador or wherever? And if a court rules someone is to be set free how does that happen? And how is this saving the U.S. anything?

We need each and every one of these sycophants on record saying whether they care if American citizens are afforded due-process or not. And if they do, how does that happen from a jail in a foreign country?

…do the utterly indefensible, and keeps saying so. Mango Mussolini wants to send any American citizen who annoys him to the equivalent of Siberia or the Black Hole of Calcutta.

Making GOPers publicly twist and turn trying to avoid answering — is a good thing.

...a better place to start--especially when you suspect they will not answer the initial question. At least ask it after the initial question is not answered. I'm not sure all of the reporters have thought that far ahead knowing the original question will not be answered anyway.

The importance is often in getting both the audience and the subject to think through the issue in more depth. This works in many situations.

Trump violated the 14th amendment, and violated his oath of office. Do GOPers have a minimum number of violations before they will do their duty and remove Trump from office?

(Emmer) "The issue that we're dealing with is we’ve got a president who wants to protect US citizens from violence, from crime, and having their children solicited, murdered, etcetera, versus Democrats who seem to want to protect illegal aliens in this country, for whatever reason.”

On NBC’s Meet the Press, Republican Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana had a more direct answer to the same question.

“No, ma’am. Nor should it be considered appropriate or moral,” the senator told moderator Kristen Welker about the prospect of deporting US citizens or housing criminals in other countries.

Yep, Emmer went with the "you liberals just want to protect criminals" bullshit. He's fully on board. ...You know what? When this is over, I'd be fine with the government paying El Salvador to "house" him and the rest of the trumpnik mob for the rest of their lives.

it's extra-judicial rendition. We need to try to get them to start using 'rendition' instead of 'deportation.

Typical. It is not just 'the left' that is angry at this administration. Yet, they keep trying to frame it as solely coming from 'the left'.

They just won't take that last step for fear of retaliation. It is up to us, folks. Ain't no one gonna fly in and save us.
