Anti-Trump protests this weekend turn focus to community action

More large-scale protests, rallies and other actions against the Trump administration are set to take place in cities across the U.S. this weekend, with organizers hoping to seize on what they say is growing resistance against anti-democratic policies. On Saturday, the 50501 Movement, which brands itself as a decentralized network, is holding what its calling a "day of action."
The name stands for 50 protests in 50 states and one movement referring to the group's first nationwide protest at state capitols. Hundreds of local protests, teach-ins, and mutual aid efforts are planned in response to what organizers say are "anti-democratic and illegal actions of the Trump administration." The White House did not respond to NPR's request for comment.
The 50501 movement, which has orchestrated protests since early February, is one of several anti-Trump movements. The "Tesla Takedown" campaign will be holding more than 100 protests this weekend, according to organizers. That group is protesting Tesla CEO Elon Musk's influential role in the Trump administration. Hunter Dunn, the national press coordinator for the 50501 Movement, says that Tesla Takedown rallies and other similar efforts are part of the same decentralized movement.
The sprawling effort encompasses any protest guided by four tenets, according to Dunn. "We're pro-democracy, we're in favor of preserving the Constitution, we're against executive overreach, and we're non-violent," he said. While the "Hands Off!" rallies on April 5 were billed as a day of protests, Saturday broadens the resistance effort to include community-focused events.

OMGWTF
(4,679 posts)of all ages, despite the cold rainy weather. Lots of great signs and the supporters driving by outnumbered the MAGAts 500 to 1. It was a really fun time -- we met several nice, informed people who were great to talk to. My sign read: "Too much shit to list" on one side and "F ELON & 47" on the other side. I am looking forward to getting back out there.
Today, April 19, 2025, is the 250th anniversary of the battles at Lexington and Concord which kicked off the American Revolution. I met an old woman in a Revolutionary War costume complete with a tri-corner hat and carrying the US flag. She said, "I had to come back here 250 years later because it's time to do this again." Literally, the stars are aligning as they were back then. Interesting times.

(5,403 posts)35,816 people. Rather than being a part of the 50501 or Indivisible organizations, it was organized by the Leavenworth County Democratic party. We lined the entire long block in front of the courthouse... still, I wish we'd had more. Evidently the last event, the "Hands Off" protest was at the VA and drew hundreds. However, the VA hospital is far from the main road and not readily visible by anyone driving by. This demonstration was right out in front of the courthouse on the main street through the city. Even if I was disappointed by the number demonstrating, we got a lot of support by cars honking and raised fists of victory as they passed us. We only had one "fly in the ointment" the whole time we were out there. One SUV stopped towards the end of the block, and was so incensed at what we were doing, he left the door open on his SUV while he began to walk up and yell obscenities at us. Word quickly went up the line to keep it civil and non-violent, no matter how this guy was acting. One woman walked out into the street and yelled, "I'm a Republican, asshole!" But that was about all that happened. Once the guy saw the third car pass his and barely avoid taking off his open car door, he got back inside and left without further incident.
We had rain last night and early this morning, and it was cold! I'm still shivering, trying to warm up. I'm looking forward to the next event they plan. I'm going to be there, too... hopefully with more bodies to carry signs and push against the machine wheel!

Millions participate in #HANDSOFF protests across the country!
Turnout in small towns across has been incredible! Were already seeing over one million in attendance nationwide, and events are still underway. Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Ohio all had especially surprising showings.
