Trump Touts Seemingly Doctored Photo of Abrego Garcia's Hand in Attempt To Prove Maryland Man Is Gang Member

President Donald Trump posted a photo of himself holding a seemingly digitally altered image of the left hand of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was wrongly deported to El Salvador last month.
Abrego Garcia is currently incarcerated in a prison in El Salvador despite a 2019 court order barring his removal to that country. Lawyers for the Trump administration initially admitted that the Maryland father of three was sent to El Salvador due to an administrative error, but the president and his top officials say they will not retrieve him and claim Abrego Garcia is member of the notorious MS-13 gang. Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a lower court ruling instructing the administration to arrange his return to the U.S. Abrego Garcia has not been charged with a crime.
On Friday, Trump posted a message on his Truth Social platform with an image purporting to be Abrego Garcias left hand. It features tattoos on his fingers that government officials previously described: a marijuana leaf, a smiley face, a cross, and a skull. But in the image Trump is holding, MS-13 is now spelled across the knuckles.
However, Matt Novak of Gizmodo pointed out on BlueSky that a photo of Abrego Garcia with Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) from Thursday clearly shows the deportees left hand. The characters MS-13 are nowhere to be found.

This is the kind of "manufactured evidence" that those demanding "criminal justice reform" point out is rampant in police departments nationwide, and particularly in urban areas. With "AI" (Absolute Idiocy), they can railroad anyone they want. And when the absurdity of pushing fake images to justify and cover-up a screw-up is promoted by the highest office-holder in the nation, then it is a clarion call to do something about this.

A now-fired Maryland police officer authored the 2019 gang report that the government referenced when it mistakenly sent a Maryland father to a notorious prison in El Salvador, documents obtained by USA TODAY show.
A copy of the pivotal gang report, released by Attorney General Pam Bondi on April 16 shields the name of the Prince Georges County, Maryland, police officer. But another, unredacted copy provided by attorneys for the imprisoned man, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, show it was written by Ivan Mendez.
Just days after the March 2019 encounter at a Home Depot in Hyattsville where Abrego Garcia was flagged as a potential MS-13 gang member, Mendez was suspended from the force.
Court records show he was then indicted in June 2020 for misconduct in office. Court records allege he shared sensitive and confidential information about an ongoing police investigation with a commercial sex worker. My Office has a zero-tolerance policy for corruption by public officials who unlawfully violate the public trust, Prince Georges County States Attorney Aisha Braveboy said in announcing the indictment.
(snip)
Based on his illegal use of information, Ivan Mendez was only an active duty officer for five days after alleging without evidence that Abrego Garcia was a gang member.
by Baynard Woods April 17, 2025
The Maryland cop who first linked Kilmar Abrego Garcia to alleged gang activity in 2019 was placed on a do not call list published by Prince Georges County States Attorney Aisha Braveboy in 2021 meaning he was deemed unfit to testify in state court due to criminal charges filed against him for sharing confidential information about a police investigation.
This means that the Trump administration has detained Abrego Garcia in the CECOT prison in El Salvador, against the rulings of the Supreme Court and a Maryland District Court, based solely on the word of a cop deemed untrustworthy by the countys states attorneys office. The New Republic first reported that PGPD Corporal Ivan Mendez, who filled out Abrego Garcias gang field interview sheet, pleaded guilty to criminal misconduct in office charges based on giving information about a police investigation to a sex worker in December 2018, according to Maryland Case Search just months before Abrego Garcias arrest in a Home Depot parking lot.
(snip)
On March 28, 2019, Abrego Garcia went to the Home Depot in Hyattsville, looking for work as a day laborer. While waiting around for a job, Abrego Garcia and three other men were stopped by police, according to court documents. At the police station, the four young men were placed into different rooms and questioned. Plaintiff Abrego Garcia was asked if he was a gang member; when he told police he was not, they said that they did not believe him and repeatedly demanded that he provide information about other gang members. The police told Plaintiff Abrego Garcia that he would be released if he cooperated, but he repeatedly explained that he did not have any information to give because he did not know anything, a 2019 court filing reads.
Mendez filled out the Gang Field Interview Sheet that deemed Abrego Garcia a member of MS-13, based on the fact that he was wearing a Chicago Bulls hat and hoodie indicative of the Hispanic gang culture and a confidential informant who told them that Abrego Garcia was an active member of MS-13 with the Westerns clique, even though the Western clique is located in Long Island a place Abrego Garcia had never been. Officers know MS-13 gang members are only allowed to hang around other members or prospects for the gang, Mendez wrote.

This country has a fucking problem with a subset of its cops and every time someone tries to address it, you have the "defenders" out in force.

(220 posts)I have definitely been on the abused side of it. And Ive also been on the good side where the guy overlooked a few things that could have landed me in some hassle. Now that Im older and less of a rebel my opinion has tempered. I have several acquaintances that are either active or retired law enforcement. They are far from zealots looking to prove a point. Actually, for the most part, they are just counting down their days to retirement and want the easiest possible glide path. One in particular is a pretty great guy. Hell, he is one of the few left that will still give you a ride home if he has to bust you for a dwi.
With that being said, I go out of my way to avoid contact with any law enforcement.
Anyway, as it applies to this guy. I thought you said his wifes protection order was fake. I dont know who to believe. From my light reading it seems like he should have been deported years ago, just not to El Salvador, is that right?

And I said nothing about any "protection order". The PRIMARY piece of evidence that Bondi, 45, et al, have been putting forward was that "police report" that alleged that he was a "MS-13 gang member", and it was BULLSHIT. I linked to 2 articles that described the cop who wrote it up and what he wrote.
And now you have the purported "President of the United States", sitting in the Oval Office, and displaying a FAKED image to "prove" that this guy was a gang member, is just breathtakingly idiotic.
Stop trying to defend this.

The place to prove your case is in court. Not on Fox.
If you have evidence that he committed a crime, take it to court. Furthermore, he had a court order that said he should not be sent to El Salvador. He came here to escape the gangs there.
The Govt admitted in court that he was sent in error.
Any other argument they present is invalid.
Are we nation of laws or not? Does the constitution matter or not?
That is not a hard argument to make. Even some MAGA folks acknowledge that all of these folks have a right to due process.

The characters MS13 have 100% been added to the photograph. That is simply not in question. However, I dont think theyve been added for the reason everyone thinks.
To my eye someone who has used Photoshop for 25 years at this point the addition is way too obvious I think the letters have been added to suggest that the marijuana leaf stands for M, the smiley face stands for S, the cross stands for 1 and the skull stands for 3. In others words, theyre saying marijuana smiley face cross skull is code for MS13.
BUT that sounds pretty dumb, so theyre trying to have their cake and eat it too. The image has been Photoshopped in such a way that it could easily fool people who dont look closely into thinking those characters are part of the tattoo. Thats been done on purpose too. If theyd wanted to, they could have made it much clearer that theyre saying the tattoos represent the characters. Instead, theyve Photoshopped it in a way that will be deliberately confusing to a lot of people.
In other words this is classic Trump/MAGA behavior make up a blatantly obvious lie, but give yourself just enough wiggle room so that when you are called on it, you can say Duh, thats obviously not what we meant and then accuse your accusers of being stupid.
Meanwhile the doctored photo continues to make its way around the internet, fooling people who cant tell its Photoshopped into thinking that the dude really does have the letters MS13 tattooed on his hand.
These people really are garbage. Is there even any evidence that that is a picture of Abrego Garcias hand, and not somebody else?

The dangerous thing about this is that I know over the past 30 or so years, these large, full-arm and even full-body tattoos have become a "thing" and back then, there were articles about whether they could not only be a way to ID someone (for nefarious reasons including attempting to "decode" what it all means), but also whether there would be any "regrets" by those who got them by the time they were a senior. That seemed to prompt development of laser treatments to remove them as well as special "ink" that, IIRC, was made of tiny gel beads that could basically be "popped" (by a laser I think), which would allow the dye to dissolve away in the body, fading the tattoo.

2 - The original report on Garcia said, "no gang affiliation". Then Bondi created this report to justify the illegal action. Garcia's citizenship was approved in 2019 (under Trump) and he reported in every year, and his report shows he stayed legit.
3 - Trump paid 4 million to detain him. and promised some 15 million to pay for jailing the deportees. You think Trump will keep his promise?
