Target CEO Cornell to meet with Sharpton to discuss DEI rollback as civil rights leader considers boycott

Target CEO Brian Cornell will meet with the Rev. Al Sharpton this week in New York as the retailer faces calls for a boycott and a slowdown in foot traffic that began after it walked back key diversity, equity and inclusion programs, the civil rights leader told CNBC Wednesday.

The meeting, which Target asked for, comes after some civil rights groups urged consumers not to shop at Target in response to the retailer’s decision to cut back on DEI. While Sharpton has not yet called for a boycott of Target, he has supported efforts from others to stop shopping at the retailer’s stores.

“You can’t have an election come and all of a sudden, change your old positions,” said Sharpton. “If an election determines your commitment to fairness then fine, you have a right to withdraw from us, but then we have a right to withdraw from you.”

The civil rights leader said he would consider calling for a Target boycott if the company doesn’t confirm its commitment to the Black community and pledge to work with and invest in Black-owned businesses. “I said, ‘If [Cornell] wants to have a candid meeting, we’ll meet,’” Sharpton said of the phone call Target made to his office. “I want to first hear what he has to say.”

I hope they go out of business. It was a pleasure to cancel that card and say why I was doing it. They can put all the Black folks in their commercials they want -

I'm not going back. When it mattered - they proved "they ain't shit".

Now, Target just strikes me as being "Walmart Lite," or simply a slightly more upscale version of Walmart.

There is no hiding the nature of it.

They can only prove themselves otherwise in another crisis moment, not when it is calm.

The Target near me has a CVS pharmacy that as far as pharmacies go, is pretty good. The only alternatives are two deadly Walgreens where people walk in, clean out the shelves into garbage bags and walk out with no one stopping them. (Corporate policy.) Walgreens will contact you to pick up your prescription; when you get there it's not ready, they don't have it and never had it. There were a couple of CVS nearby, but one closed for the same problem as Walgreens, the other one has no staff, and Costco is on the far western edge of two suburbs over. So Target is it.

While I was there yesterday, I walked around. This Target services a large "mixed" (well-integrated in my 75 yr old lingo) area and carries an extensive array of ethnic (read curly gurls and black) hair products. This particular Target is notorious for being understocked ever since it opened in 2012, and usually the ethnic hair products section has huge gaps in inventory. The hair products section was the fullest I have ever seen it in 13 years. Other parts of the store (produce, grocery, clothing, textiles, etc.) were also very "filled in". Other than myself, I saw only one person of color.

It's obvious we ain't shopping there. I assume Target's CEO is crying uncle and wants to make a deal.

You already showed your true colors. Now you think you're going to bribe your way out of your cowardice? GFY.
