Summers: 'Any self-respecting Treasury secretary would resign' over Trump Harvard IRS directive

Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers said on Thursday that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent should resign before he complies with President Trumps directive for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to revoke Harvard Universitys tax-exempt status.
In a thread on the social platform X, Summers warned of the broader implications of using the IRS to target political opponents. Any self-respecting Treasury Secretary would resign rather have the Department be complicit in the weaponization of the IRS against a political adversary of the President, Summers wrote.
Harvard will endure and it is far, far from perfect, but if this directive is not withdrawn, the Administration will have taken another substantial step away from the rule of law and democracy, he continued. The Treasury Department on Wednesday sent an inquiry to the IRSs acting chief counsel, Andrew De Mello, asking the agency to rescind Harvards tax-exempt status, according to The Washington Post.
The official directive came one day after Trump floated the idea of revoking Harvards status in a post on his Truth Social platform, writing, Perhaps Harvard should lose its Tax Exempt Status and be Taxed as a Political Entity if it keeps pushing political, ideological, and terrorist inspired/supporting Sickness?

.@SecScottBessent is derelict with respect to what may be his most important dutymaintaining law-based rights respecting our tax collection system. DOGE violating privacy rules, evisceration of enforcement capacity, politicization of leadership and now political intrusion into a specific taxpayers status.
The result will be revenue losses of a trillion dollars or more over the next decade. The erosion of American democracy has costs that cannot be priced.
George Shultz met his test by facing down President Richard Nixon when his staff tried to interfere with the IRS. Tragic that @SecScottBessent has not protected the IRS.

That is why they were chosen for cult positions.
They are there to destroy this country.
If this is news to you, where the fuck have you been ???

(55,017 posts)Stay and gum up the works, delay things as much as possible until they fire you, and then sue them.
Don't make it easy by resigning.
That's just an attempt to keep your own image intact while paving the way for them to proceed with whatever evil they were contemplating.

(2,869 posts)If Trump's sycophants found their heart and cojones to quit, Trump would be hurt politically and angered like the nasty, selfish child we know him to be. And none of Trump's stooges -- and Bessent is one of them -- would ever do anything to hurt Trump because Trump would bring the damned house down on their heads. All of them, including Bessent, are absolutely willing, eager even, to follow him into deep, deep fascism -- and to smear with feces the walls of democracy.
We'll see if the mid-terms are allowed to run fairly. The more the fascists tamper, obstruct, and outright cheat, the less likely our children and grandchildren will grow up in a democratic country. And that, sorry to say, is the goal of the fascist swine who were voted into power by 77,000,000 honest to god morons.

(55,017 posts)But individual resignations here and there merely become part of the purge. They *want* people who would ever oppose them to get out of their way.
As for the numbers in the last election, I'll reserve judgment until a credible investigation is done, if ever. We certainly know these are the kind of people who would cheat if they could find a way to do so, and Donnie's campaign did *not* look like a winning campaign at all. All around, I saw far less support and enthusiasm for him than in either of his previous runs, while support for Kamala was massive.

(781 posts)On the board of governors of Harvard is Penny Pritzker, whose brother is the governor of Illinois.
There is a story that Trump's feud with Pritzkers may go back decades.

As the story relates, Trump settled two lawsuits with the Pritzker family from their 1970s partnership in NY Hyatt Hotel.
And Trump vowed revenge.

(40,372 posts)He seems to be an extremist and partially responsible for hideous economic policies.
News gossip said he wants to resign.
Not clear but he's not the good guy Wall St is praying for.
