United flight makes emergency landing after apparent rabbit strike, video shows engine fire

An unusual animal encounter causing a scare in for passengers on a United Airlines flight.
A rabbit somehow made it into the right engine of flight UA2325 from Denver to Edmonton on Sunday.
The possible wildlife strike happened as the Boeing 737 with 159 people on board was taking off.
"There was a loud bang and a significant vibration in the plane we proceeded to still climb," passenger Scott Wolff said.

I'd like to know how they know it was a rabbit after it had been through the compression blades.

I hope everyone on the flight is doing well. Poor rabbit. Some of them can get rather dangerously large, though.

(27,213 posts)Flemish giants are a domesticated type of rabbit that is considered to be the largest breed of rabbit in the world.
The first records of them show their origin in Flanders, which is the northern region of Belgium. There were several ancient meat and fur breeds of rabbit that likely went into the Flemish, one of which is the ancient Patagonian rabbit. Unfortunately the Patagonian is now extinct.
Flemish Giant rabbits were also responsible for a United States rabbit boom back in the 1880s. Farmers and people with small acreage could raise large amounts of rabbits that were dual purpose. Due to their size they were prized for both meat and fur. That was when the breed as largely imported into the United States.
