Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is seeking to block confirmation for President Donald Trumps nominees for top federal prosecutors in New York. His hard line comes as hes facing mounting pressure from his partys base to push back against the Trump administration more aggressively following his decision last month to allow a GOP-drafted government funding bill to advance rather than use his leverage and threaten a shutdown. At the same time, Schumers stance also could have repercussions for longstanding norms granting lawmakers a say in who represents their constituents on the federal bench.
Senate leaders typically defer to senators to sign off on confirming judicial nominees in their home states, awaiting a return of the so-called blue slip to begin the confirmation process in the Judiciary Committee. But Schumer announced Wednesday morning he will not return the blue slip for Trumps picks to serve as New York attorneys: Jay Clayton to head the Southern District of New York office, which oversees Wall Street and regularly prosecutes some of the countrys biggest white-collar cases; and Joseph Nocella Jr. to run the Eastern District of New York office, which prosecutes scores of MS-13 gang cases as well as immigration matters arising from John F. Kennedy International Airport.
Donald Trump has made clear he has no fidelity to the law and intends to use the Justice Department, the U.S. Attorney offices and law enforcement as weapons to go after his perceived enemies, Schumer said in a statement. Such blatant and depraved political motivations are deeply corrosive to the rule of law and leaves me deeply skeptical of
Donald Trumps intentions for these important positions.
This game of hardball could play well with progressive activists, who called for Schumers ouster as leader after the government funding fight and floated the prospect of a potential 2028 primary challenge from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.).

Turtle allowed the discarding/ignoring of the blue slips during 45's first term so I expect Thune/ASSley will ignore Schumer.
Example of one -

MJ article about it (2019) - Blue Slips Are Finally Dead
They were brought back when we took over the Senate but with this MAGat group, I don't expect them to last.

He will cave like he did last time. Anyone putting their faith in Schumer to do the right thing is only setting themselves up for disappointment.

(151,125 posts)there wouldn't even be a need for him to cave because he would probably be overridden should they ignore/get rid of the Blue Slips, and I expect 45 will direct Thune and ASSley to make it so like he made Turtle and ASSley do during the first term.
But I suppose it does at least show that after all these years, he finally remembers that there is a "tool" that one can use to make an attempt at wresting some control over what goes on in his state.

(10,550 posts)That moron Tuberville held up military confirmations for months. Republicans filibustered all the time during the Biden administration.
I keep hearing how powerless they are but never once heard the Republicans make that complaint much less act like it.
If they are so damn powerless to do anything why are they wasting their time in DC? Their time would be better spent in their own respective states organizing people and building a stronger voter base because just hanging out in DC is pointless.

(151,125 posts)That's different from the "Blue Slip" and you actually already have several Democrats who have put "holds" on 45 appointments -

What Stuporville did was to block the routine "unanimous consent" promotions for those military meaning that each one (and there were hundreds) would have to go through "regular order" of a cloture vote, then a debate, and then a final vote versus "dispensing" with all that and going right to a unanimous vote of approval of dozens at a time, "without objection". At the time, Schumer refused to waste the Senate's time going one by one (which also added to the delay), although he did push through some of the highest level ones.
As someone in the Senate leadership as Minority Leader, Schumer is technically not serving on any Committees so he wouldn't (or couldn't) technically do any "holds". And that is why he's trying to block the nominee using a Blue Slip.
