Social Security backs off cuts to phone services amid outcry

After weeks of confusion and outcry, the Social Security Administration said it is backing off its announced drastic cuts to phone services.
Why it matters: The changes would've strained an already backlogged agency and possibly even kept eligible Americans from receiving benefits.
"Telephone remains a viable option to the public," the agency said in a statement.
Zoom in: The cuts were slated to begin in less than a week. Instead the agency said in an email that "beginning on April 14, SSA will allow all claim types to be completed over the telephone."
"This includes Retirement, Survivors, and Auxiliary (Spouse or Child) benefits that SSA previously announced would require in-person identity proofing, in addition to Social Security Disability Insurance, Medicare, and SSI."
Where it stands: Going forward, Social Security will implement some fraud safeguards in phone service, the agency said.
If individuals are flagged then they would be required to visit a field office.

Keep the pressure on, ladies & gents. Keep after those people you sent to Congress and make allies of your state's fighting AGs if you are lucky enough to have one of those! Plan more 'meet-ups of our discontent' and write those scalding hot letters to the editors.

(5,672 posts)Said there are a thousand + people protesting on the 4 corners of the intersection by the Tesla dealership DAILY. Gotta figure that will slow down as temps go up; the official reported temp is nowhere near actual temps at street level, and that is a VERY busy intersection, so add 10-30 degrees just from the heat of vehicles and blacktop. But Tucson is home to a lot of very determined liberals, so I expect some of the protesters will keep up the vigil.
If Elon's feelings are hurt... well, how does that old saying go: if you can't stand the heat...
He's not uncovering fraud, he's looking for excuses to cut congressionally approved funding for hundreds of important policies he personally dislikes. And then he wants, no he THINKS, all that money should go to his companies. It's not government efficiency he is doing, it's a heist. And who knows what sketchy crap his baby hackers are up to with all our personal data. This guy couldn't pass a pre-school class because he is not mature enough to know we share on this planet, he doesn't own it and us.

(6,269 posts)I am not going to take the word of lying sacks of shit piled atop the administration. When real SS employees start speaking about it I'll listen. Until then this is all political blather to divert our attention - again.
