US egg giant Cal-Maine says government is investigating price increases

Source: AP

Updated 6:25 PM EDT, April 8, 2025

Shares of Cal-Maine Foods, the largest U.S. egg producer, fell in after-hours trading Tuesday after the company acknowledged it is being investigated by the antitrust division of the U.S. Department of Justice.

Ridgeland, Mississippi-based Cal-Maine said it received notice of the investigation into egg price increases last month. Cal-Maine said it is cooperating with the investigation. The company’s shares fell more than 4% in after-hours trading.

Egg prices have hit record highs in recent months, largely due to a bird flu epidemic that has forced farmers to slaughter more than 166 million birds, mostly egg-laying chickens.

One dozen Grade A eggs cost an average of $5.90 in U.S. cities in February, up 10.4% from a year ago. That eclipsed January’s record-high price of $4.95. The egg price increases have put Cal-Maine, which provides around 20% of the nation’s eggs, under increased scrutiny.

bird flu is real and thriving. shithole musk republicans are depressing the factual information on bird flu and have fired scientists that can eradicate it.

Fuck the GQP.

Oh, RWer's concerns - more guns, de-fund libraries, ban books, destroy education, destroy healthcare, lower paying jobs, screw the world economy, tilt the USA for the Great Depression 2.

The contracts the companies make with the farmers are designed to tightly control the market and screw the farmer.

egg prices were reasonable before the outbreak of bird flu for years. shithole ran on "the eggs are too high". No mention of the companies screwing farmers, oh by the way, corporations and companies screwing farmers just reached another screw - immigration. Thousands are deported.

Plus, the current administration are screwing farmers across the country, therefore now, the corporations, companies and the government are extremely screwing the farmers.

They'll get to the bottom of this, along with screwing up their systems, and firing a bunch of chickens.

My husband used to do contract electrical work for Cal-Maine. Millions of birds in cavernous barns. Many of his worker bees were undocumented.
