Pete Buttigieg Declines to Run for Senate -- Because He's Eyeing the White House: Report

Former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg will not run for Senate in 2026 mostly because hes got his eye on a bigger prize. According to Politico, Buttigieg has ruled out a bid to join the upper chamber of Congress as the junior senator from Michigan after meeting with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and weighing his options.
His decision was framed by several allies and people in his inner circle as putting him in the strongest possible position to seek the presidency, and based on a belief it would be exceedingly difficult to run successive campaigns in 2026 and 2028, according to Politico.
Pete was an A-list recruit and would have been a formidable candidate for the Senate had he chosen to run, famed Democratic strategist David Axelrod told the outlet. But had he won in 26, it would almost certainly have taken him out of the conversation for 28. This certainly keeps that option open.
Buttigieg previously mounted an longshot bid for the White House in 2020. He managed to win the most delegates in the Iowa Caucus (despite finishing with the second most votes) and tie Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) in New Hampshire. He dropped out after finishing fourth in the South Carolina primary. Prior to his confirmation as secretary of transportation in 2021, the highest title Buttigieg had ever held was mayor of South Bend, Indiana.

(103 posts)Havent we learned by now that there are a hell of a lot more deplorables in this country that even Hillary Clinton imagined?

(20,136 posts)He won't be president, unfortunately. He's very unlikely even to be the Democratic candidate. He would be a powerfully effective senator.

(37,192 posts)If Pete fails in his run for the Presidency, he'll still have other options. Don't forget that Joe Biden ran for President as a young Senator in 1988, and then again in 2008.
If Pete Buttigieg decides to run in 2028, it will be a positive experience for him and for our Party.
Let's not write him down before he gets there.

(12,363 posts)too many in this country won't vote for a woman or a gay person no matter who it is.
Right now with the way they have stripped millions of votes throughout the country I am not sure if we can win again with anyone, the game is rigged. And they hold all the cards.
Trump isn't afraid of anything he is doing now because he has got away with everything.
I think that is why at end of Anora movie I felt sick to my stomach, the rich father just laughing at the whole mess like it was just another funny blunder his son did that was meaningless to the family.

(40,425 posts)That was my thinking. A win in a swing state like Michigan would have ended all doubts about his national potential IMO.
Hell still be a strong candidate. This resume point would have made him much stronger.

(8,254 posts)He'd be a great Senator! Sadly, his private life is problematic for a number of voters in a national election.

(19,851 posts)So maybe now the country will elect a gay man.
Love you Pete, but this will be a make or break election for the nation. There's too much at stake to be showing off our big tent.
We need a candidate who is universally appealing.
Much to accomplish from a desk in the Senate. For now.

(104 posts)Pete is awesome. He's decent, competent, smart, rational, quick-thinking, and he'd win any debate.
But intelligence alone doesn't win a national election. Remember Harris vs Trump? Clinton vs Trump? Bush vs. Gore? Another Bush vs Dukakis?
And here in this xenophobic nation that's turned toward fascism, we're considering gay Dukakis with an unfortunate name?
Pete would make a great senator.

(1,938 posts)provided calm , strong, visible, effective leadership during this dark time. Doesnt have to be someone currently in office necessarily, could be someone well spoken like Pete who gets himself in some kind of spokesman position where he can get heard. Ideally someone who can channel both FDR and Zelensky. 2028 - even 2026 - is light years away. I truly question the judgement of someone who does not recognize the seriousness of this moment and the very real risk (likelihood?) that things can look radically different once the wrecking crew gets done in Washington. The phrase fiddling while Rome burns comes to mind.

(8,663 posts)are so discouraging. Sec Pete is a great candidate for President. I think he could win easily because he's the perfect match for our party. I'll be voting for him for President for sure.
Pete, Pete Pete!

(3,432 posts)I thought he moved to Michigan for a better chance to get elected to the Senate than in red Indiana, and to keep a somewhat toss-up state in blue hands.
I would support Pete as a POTUS candidate with all my spare cash and all my might. But, I don't think there's enough national support for a 2-dad family in the Whitehouse. There damn well should be. But, I don't think there is.
He's one of the smartest guys in the room. Dems need him badly in some sort of national leadership position. He has 2 young kids that he should be dedicating his life to, and I don't want to sound selfish, but America needs Pete.

(55,497 posts)We're just not good enough a country to elect a decent, brilliant gay man like Pete as President.
It's why we can't have nice things.

(526 posts)Pete is brilliant and a great talker but not who we need as President.
He would be a great spokes person, not President.
