MANILA, Philippines (AP) Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested by police at Manilas international airport Tuesday on order of the International Criminal Court in connection with a case of crime against humanity filed against him, the Philippine government said.
Duterte was arrested after arriving from Hong Kong and police took him into custody on orders of the ICC, which has been investigating the massive killings that happened under the former presidents deadly crackdown against illegal drugs, President Ferdinand Marcos office said in a statement.
The Manila office of the International Police received an official copy of the arrest warrant from the global court and the notice for an arrest warrant was served to the former president, the government said.
It was not immediately clear where Duterte was taken by the police. The government said the 79-year-old former leader was in good health and was examined by government doctors.

(2,552 posts)and I just hope this doesn't become a political catastrophe concerning the politically warring factions of the Marcoses and Duterte's. The mid-terms here are in May and both groups have opposing slates for the Senate and House. The one thing I know is that Duterte was close to Trump and the Chinese. Marcos Jr. was close to the US and Biden. Of course, in this new age of kiss the king's ass under Trump, Marcos Jr. will have to walk the same tight rope that every other world leader does.
Duterte was arrested for arresting and punishing individuals (including summary executions) without following the rule of law.
The Philippines could easily end corruption in the country by adopting the American approach. Legalize it.

(777 posts)Wherever this goes, don't underestimate the impact of the arrest. A man who was recently leader of a large nation committed atrocities with impunity, but has now been arrested by an international organization for his crimes.
Huge victory for justice, regardless of whether it leads anywhere. There's no room for a divine right of kings if humanity is to be free.
