Early election results show majority of Sitka voters do not want limits on cruise ships

SITKA, Alaska (KTUU) - A majority of Sitka voters do not want to limit cruise ships, according to early, unofficial election results.

The special election, which was held on Wednesday, asked voters if they wanted to limit cruise ships that accommodate over 250 overnight passengers. The regulations would include limiting port calls from May 1 to Sept. 30 and only for six days a week.

There would also be a daily cap of 4,500 passengers and an annual cap of 300,000 passengers per cruise season. Cruise ship operators must also report visitation data to the City and Borough of Sitka.

Over 2,000 people voted against the limitations, while 773 people voted in favor. These early results include early voting and election day voting, but not absentee ballots.
