The Bulwark: Pete Buttigieg Says Marco Rubio Will Never Recover From This Lie

Jul 14, 2026 The Bulwark Podcast with Tim Miller

Democrats tend to defend the institutions that Trump is tearing apart, but Pete Buttigieg says the party should be focusing on the bigger, deeper structural problems the country is facing and the need for political reform. The kind of radical institutional changes he’d like to see include: expanding SCOTUS and the House of Representatives, statehood for Washington, D.C., and directly electing the president by popular vote. Plus, Pete gets candid about the “most fucked-up thing” that’s ever happened to his family, the big opportunity for Dems in Iowa in November, and Pete’s stumping for candidates in places where Fox News reigns.

Pete Buttigieg joined Tim Miller in Des Moines.

Show notes:

Here is a list provided by Pete Buttigieg of candidates he has endorsed in the 2026 election cycle: https://www.thebulwark.com/api/v1/fil...

Can we please stop fooling ourselves into believing that one day a Republican will tell a lie so big the American people will have no other option but hold them to account?

That kind of stuff happens here a bunch, I’m still waiting for the blue tsunami I’ve been told is headed my way now every year for the last ten.

Haven’t even really seen a good bore tide, there night have been one or two small sets, but nothing like the tsunami. That’s as likely as a republican doing what you suggested. Not going to happen.

On edit: TX actually flipping, that’s another lie I wish we’d stop peddling here. Not gonna happen ever, despite Austin. Remember what Juneteenth celebrates anyway. Those people will remain with their hand on the tiller even if Talarico wins, and I really don’t believe he’s going to, no matter how much I like him, his message, or the pain it would cause if TX “flips”. Outside chance to elect Talarico, but TX will never go blue.

They should add 50-100 people. More representation is good. The current model is based on a country of around 100 million people.

The way that political jobs are set up in the United States, people no longer wish to run for office simply as a means to serve their country, but rather as a lifetime career with all the perks they can Vote for themselves once elected.
