'Victimhood!' GOP lawmaker loses it at disabled veterans in profane tirade

By David Edwards
Published July 16, 2026 1:30 PM ET

A GOP lawmaker went on a profane Thursday tirade insisting that disability benefits for veterans needed to be cut because they were "encouraging victimhood."

Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX), a retired Navy SEAL, unloaded on the Veterans of Foreign Wars in a post on X after House Republicans were forced to pull a veterans' benefits bill from the floor Thursday.

The VFW had urged Congress to vote against the bill, helping to sink it.

How about you spend your time reducing the billions of dollars the ultra wealthy are getting and show appreciation to our vets by giving them what they deserve. I’m gonna paint with a wide brush and say that this Republican Party, by whatever name they go by, has become the most cruel, selfish, corrupt and unAmerican bunch of people we’ve ever known. And that goes for those keeping silent and not demanding better from their leaders

Personally, I think if your employer puts you in danger because of their decisions, then they OWE you. If you worked in an office and were exposed to toxins, that's what your lawyer would tell your former employer.

In that same vein, when soldiers are disabled by events that their government exposed them to, there is a responsibility. Yes that's an expensive responsibility, 54K men were killed in combat in Vietnam. 300K, yes 300,000 more died from Agent Orange related illnesses once they came home. And there are a couple of hundred thousand (including me) that are getting VA health care because of AO.

That story and it's astounding costs has been very successfully suppressed by Congress. People served in good faith, with promises they and their families would be taken care of if bad things happened as a result. Now the fucking budget (chicken)hawks want to cut the funding because their instituitons bad decisions to pursue ointelss war is STILL costing the gov;t big money.

What do they really think? It seems that they think we AO vets ought to die and get our accounts off the government's books

"Texas' lieutenant governor suggests grandparents are willing to die for US economy"

“No one reached out to me and said, ‘as a senior citizen, are you willing to take a chance on your survival in exchange for keeping the America that all America loves for your children and grandchildren?’” Patrick said. “And if that’s the exchange, I’m all in.”

I'm not shitting you. He actually went there. There's more if you read the article.

Republican politicians (in general) don't give a flying fuck for anyone but themselves and their families (maybe/sort of).
That may seem hyperbolic, but I see this time and time again. They all need to be marooned on an island with scarce resources
like "Lord of the Flies." I wouldn't trust them to walk my dog.

What happened to the GOP that was so pro the troops and our veterans? Everything they claimed to be over the years has evaporated - it was all just political hype in the first place.

For decades, they pretty much said what they thought people wanted to hear. They are phony right down to their toes and for the most part they are the reason that people don't trust politicians.

Of course, there have been some Democrats who have done the same thing, but nothing like republicans who will say or do anything to win.

It's truly amazing and scary how out of touch these politicians are from veterans and the other bottom 90% of Americans. We've got a lot of work ahead of us.

They just don't want those who know better to be enlightening the young recruits before they get shipped off to die for something that makes no sense, much less helps this country.

that Nixon started a lot of programs to brainwash the troops and to blame the Democrats for putting them in losing wars with no support. Then along came FOX the network of no choice for anywhere there was a TV, the academies, especially the Air Force and the Christian Nationalists. Building a divide between generational military families(especially in red states with rich military contracts) and "civilians". Blacks generally had experienced to much of this crap(racially coded as well) to fall for it, but I am sure they noticed. The revolving door between high officers to GOP lobbyists, which is the power and money lean. As usual, people vulnerable to FOX out of resentment and fear, can be reached even more easily in an authoritarian environment.

You mean, like, purposely getting injured to get benefits?
I don't think so !

You ask volunteers to be in the Armed Forces, a challenging experience - you take proper care of them when injured.
Eff your cruelty!

As long as we have armed forces, and I think we've had too many wars - treat them right!

support our veterans.

Their party has consistently voted to slash veteran care for so long without ever being forced to explain it or answer for it. In a way, it's actually refreshing to see them finally admit what they are.
