The strip of dense wildfire smoke can be seen on satellites stretching from the Upper Midwest and Canada, across the Great Lakes, through southern Ontario and New England and down to New York City. Some of it is even traveling out over the Atlantic Ocean and back up to the far eastern coastline of Canada.
Weather forecasters expect the smoke to darken skies again on Thursday across North America. As of Thursday morning, air quality readings surged to dangerous levels in many places, including Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Minneapolis and Toronto.

The sky around here in the Hudson Valley resembled an orange Mars hellscape photo. I stayed in most of the day as it was heavy. A lot of outdoor activities were canceled here.

(4,247 posts)This weather satellite is the main one used to monitor weather from California to across the Atlantic (for hurricanes). It should be noted Krasnovs regime cancelled 4 hurricane satellites last year that would've been operational now. GOES 19 unexpectedly went into "safe mode" and they're trying to figure out why. It may be days or it may be months we will be without one of the most important weather monitoring tools we have.

(48 posts)Dangerous. Any exposure to the air, even for a few minutes, can lead to serious health effects on everybody. Avoid outdoor activities.

(10,776 posts)each day. The sky is milk white and the sun is an orange ball. It's almost impossible to spend time outside in this weather without becoming ill.
I really feel for anyone without access to an air conditioner right now; it's as dangerous as being without heat here in the winter.

(8,299 posts)WPR (Wisc Public Radio) spoke to someone from the Wisc DNR (dept of natural resources) this morning and he said he's extending the 'extreme danger' warning until noon on Friday.
Starting yesterday I could smell the smoke inside the house despite all of the windows being closed up tight. Thank goodness for central air conditioning.
One good thing about it, though. At least it smells like a campfire. I've been in pot-friendly places that reeked like a Skunk let loose. So there's that, anyway.
