(418 posts)Sorry to hear of his recent passing and Demond's too. Hal's character always had to translate black vernacular for his clueless white partner. It got a lot of laughs. Redd Foxx and the writers pushed the bounds of what was acceptable comedy back in the day. I wonder if today's audience watching re-runs are still laughing or are offended by Redd Foxx as Fred Sanford using the N-word in a few episodes. There was always a current of insult comedy throughout all the dialog. And this was especially good for laughs when LaWanda Page as Aunt Esther would get insulted by Fred and say, "Watch it sucker," and give him her stink-eye squint.
Nowadays everyone seems to be on a razor's edge, ready to not only take offense to bad words, but react in ways that are too often deadly.

I'm not even sure this can be done on TV anymore.

(418 posts)Even the contemporary broadcast of a Three Stooges episode about a mummy king who was called a midget is edited. I noticed that this original dialog was edited out of concerns about insulting some who must now only be called a dwarf not a midget, which is considered to be a slur. Today everything is "weaponized." And even the words we use are now part of battles both silly and serious. So one person's good-hearted humor is another's blood feud.
