Drained reflecting pool reveals Trump's 'American flag blue' liner is now closer to gray

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jul/15/dc-reflecting-pool-gray

Trump's effort to revamp the landmark stretched well past the goal of having it ready by the Fourth of July

The newly drained Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool's bottom surface has noticeably faded since it was lined with a protective coating in a color Donald Trump called "American flag blue" this spring.

An Associated Press reporter and photographer viewed the fenced-off reflecting pool on Wednesday from the top of the Washington Monument. The new liner appears grayer than when the pool was repainted and refilled with water in early June. Debris that had been visible earlier this week after the pool was drained is now largely gone, after work crews removed it.

Trump's problem-plagued effort to revamp the landmark has stretched well past his initial goal of having the reflecting pool ready by 4 July for the nation's 250th birthday.

The president at first suggested his renovations would cost $1.5m, but the bill ballooned to more than $16m by June.

Add a lit microbial action to the mix.

from every report I read this was similar to a pool liner. That shouldn't be affected by bleach or hydrogen peroxide.

In the deep part where chemicals pooled because I didn't sweep the crystals off the bottom.

Hypochlorite salts? Calcium hypochlorite or something?

The action of solid crystals on the surface of the liner is way more intense than the dilute peroxide action in the reflecting pool.

It is really interesting chemistry. I wonder how it happened.

While it isn't the exact formula used in bed liners, the company that made the product Trump used on the Reflecting Pool is one of the two biggest manufacturers of truck bed lining.

A pool liner is sorta like a bag you attach to the walls of your pool to keep the water in. This was sprayed on.

Trump obviously is.

Things are a lot more complicated now with all the multiple levels of shell corporations/LLCs/off-shore partnerships, etc.

To say nothing about flat-out lying on any required form.

they fix whatever pipes might be broken, seal seams if needed, and leave it gray? Fill it back up and let it be.

Put the $$ into something else that he's screwed up. Or, put it toward the $16,000 per hour in helicopter costs it takes to tote JD Vance's son to his golf lessons?

I suspect years of use of that dye would leave the lining darkened anyway, which should also make the reflecting pool seemingly more reflective. Trmp's plan to paint it FL-swimming-pool blue was horribly misguided from the beginning. No one in this maladministration gives a shit about history, tradition, established procedures, or records left by their predecessors. They COULD HAVE read up on how and why the pool was designed the way it was, but NOOOOOOOOO!

It would reflect the somber reality that it was meant to convey, in my opinion.
