https://www.algemeiner.com/2026/07/08/new-poll-reveals-support-for-israel-eroding-among-democrats/Support for Israel among Democratic voters has fallen to its lowest level in years, according to a new Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll, underscoring a dramatic realignment within the Democratic Party as the aftermath of the war in Gaza continues to reshape US politics.
The survey found that a majority of Democrats now sympathize more with the Palestinians than with Israelis, while Republicans remain overwhelmingly supportive of Israel one of the widest partisan divides over the US-Israel relationship in decades.
According to the poll, 56 percent of Democrats say they sympathize more with the Palestinian people, while just 14 percent say they sympathize more with Israelis. Among Republicans, by contrast, 71 percent say they are more sympathetic to Israel, compared with just 7 percent who identify more closely with the Palestinians.
The findings come nearly three years after the Oct. 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel by the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas, in which approximately 1,200 people were killed and roughly 250 others taken hostage. Israel launched its military campaign in Gaza following the attack, saying its objective was to dismantle Hamas, free the hostages, and prevent another massacre.
The poll suggests Democratic voters have grown increasingly critical of Israels conduct during the war. Fifty-eight percent of Democrats now believe the United States is too supportive of Israel, up from 45 percent in an AP-NORC survey conducted in early 2024, while 53 percent say Washington is not supportive enough of the Palestinians a continued shift away from the bipartisan consensus that defined US support for Israel for decades.

(152,205 posts)I do not necessarily support the actions of its government, though.
Two different things.

(11,230 posts)The conflation of being anti-Israeli government at the moment with being antisemitic is troubling to me. I would say that many Democrats and Americans are anti-Netanyahu but pro Israel being a country and anti-antisemitic. Simply put:
I support the nationhood of Israel and their right to defend that nation
I support the people of Palestine having their right to exist as a separate nation without fear of slaughter by any other nation
I DO NOT support Hamas or their despicable actions
I DO NOT support any despicable actions toward civilians by the IDF in retaliation
I DO NOT support Netanyahu in his leadership of Israel and his actions in the region
I reject any action against Jewish people around the globe as either a response to Netanyahu's actions or as general hatred toward Jews
I reject any action against Palestinians around the globe as either a response to Hamas or general hatred toward Islam

(424 posts)The actions of the Zionist settlers and the IDF that supports them risks destroying the US support that they still have left.
Israelis once said "never again" but now here they are doing it.
Support for Israel should not mean supporting genocide for the Palestinians.
There will be a lot of support for completely eliminating arms supplies for Israel unless there is drastic change and soon.

(35,301 posts)We all know there are long going security issues in the ME. Any president, Democratic or GOP will realize this. Any president who feels they should support the Palestinians over Israel is gonna quickly end up in a mess.
I don't support giving Israel unlimited defense. They need to protect themselves, but we shouldn't give them any more. We shouldn't support them causing wars.
Christian Zionists in the US are a real problem in the US politics.
Support for Israel, should hinge on national security, not on some religious belief about the end times.
I think Israel is still going to continue to be a hardline state, even if we decrease funding. That's because all the countries in the ME are hardline. The demographics of Israel has significantally changed. Instead of liberal Ashkenazi's, it is now https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mizrahi_Jews who migrated from other ME countries.

(2,398 posts)Much like with Trump, it's that a significant number of people support him. For a long time after the October 7 polls showed a majority of Israelis wanted to get rid of Gazans. There's a reason right wing parties keep getting elected in Israel.
Likewise it's a problem that Hamas has enough support (and some fear) to get away with remaining in power in Gaza.
Sure both sets of extremists have their reasons, but both sides need to do better to get better results.

(37,233 posts)They vote overwhelmingly in support of Bibi. The "settlers" and their violence aren't all Bibi. The IDF, targeting children with head shots on the ground and civilian homes from the air are not all Bibi. Israel is a rotten apartheid regime whose national aspirations are founded upon genocide. It is a terrorist state. No more US support for Israel!

(4,453 posts)I do not support Israel's continued land grabs, forcing people off land occupied by their ancestors for centuries.
I do not support Hamas, Hezbollah, and support for them by any other nation.
However -- the Sons of Abraham have been at each other's throats for longer than any of us have been alive and for as long as there has been recorded history. My opinions will change nothing.

Netanyahu has carte blanche to do as he pleases. He is protected, supported, and funded. Ben-Givr implements the policy in Gaza and the West Bank.
They want our two militaries to become one, while our own government ramps up its own ethnic cleansing campaign.

I don't work against them, their 'friends' are doing plenty of damage without me.being involved.
I hope they recover their balance.

(43,444 posts)That's probably the same thing that the Europeans are saying about us. The "14% favorability" means that Netanyahu is disfavored by 86% of Americans. The US needs to carefully consider who we're keeping in power, because the USA is literally the only friend he has left.
