Don't the people of South Carolina get a say? Even if this is only temporary, it doesn't seem right to me.

But what do I know?

Vacancies Filled at the Next General Election

In 35 states, the governor makes an appointment to fill a U.S. Senate vacancy, and the appointee serves until the next regularly scheduled statewide general election. The person elected serves for the remainder of the unexpired term. If the term was set to expire at that general election, the person elected serves a full six-year term. Ten states require the appointee to be of the same party as the vacating senator: Arizona, Hawaii, Kansas, Maryland, Montana, Nevada, North Carolina, Utah, West Virginia and Wyoming.

Twenty-one of these states have different timeline requirements for holding the election if the vacancy occurs within a specified number of days of the next general election: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. Kansas and Utah require their governors to make an appointment based on a list of three recommended prospects from the legislature.

She or somebody else will have to run in Lindsey's place for the upcoming midterm election. All legal, I'm afraid.

That person would know what was being worked on, the thinking process of how to put together an opposing view of an issue or an agreement on the issue. That person would know the contacts needed to proceed, or the senate’s own rules of procedure. TSF wants a person in this position for a vote for his issues and not a qualified replacement..imo

I remember Mel Carnahan's wife, Jean, replacing him and serving in good capacity.

Yeah, there are better choices in the pool, but they made a choice based on emotion not logic.

Edit: Plus it is probably easier for Trump to just remember the new lady as Lindsay Graham's sister and not someone else

This Governor can appoint but Gov. Beshear can't? I understand two different states (separate laws) BUT at the very least it tells a story of how RETHUGS think and do. What i'm saying is these rethugs are dirty as they come!!

However, according to the state constitution, the governor has the power. The constitutionality of those laws hasn’t been tested.

The government doesn’t work for the People, they work for the owners, the international imperialist empire.

It’s pretty obvious. Has been for a long, long time.

It happened today in plain sight - Trump said it on Fox directly to Gov McMaster, who then acted based on his decree. WTF.

It's long been common practice in the Third World (and in the Deep South) to replace some high-profile politician with his wife, sister, son, daughter, cousin, etc.

No experience? No problem - in fact, the lack thereof is usually preferred (as the string-pullers only want a puppet with a famous last name).

It seldom works out well however.

Argentine populist leader Juan Perón and his inept wife (and successor), Isabel, shortly before his 1974 death.

Nominated as his running mate by sole virtue of being his wife (and because she wasn't identified with any one Peronist faction), her subsequent two-year regime became a master class in what not to do as president.

In fairness to Mrs. Perón though, she never wanted the job.

I fully expected that McMasters would appoint, who he wanted for the Senate. That would give him/her an edge come the election. Along with an IOU.

I was secretly hoping he would appoint Mace. LOL.

Breathe ... we already have the worst of the worst. We know what we're in for and the fight is on. Just focus on the end game. We. Will. Endure. This cannot outlast us. And if we lose??? They'll NEVER take our souls and THEY will eventually see that they have lost as well. Because they will b left with a burnt out shell of nothing. Get angry and fight. This cannot stand. We got this.
