I've been preaching this for some time. I actually wish we could have a '28 candidate who looked like Jason Statham. Yes, I think its absolutely ridiculous that I feel that way, but WINNING is all that matters at this point. We simply MUST get more men back to the Party. And candidates like these are a move in that direction.

"Brian poindexter had just finished wolfing down a Reuben sandwich in a deli outside Cleveland when he delivered a message that, coming from a Democratic House candidate in the year 2026, sounded almost provocative. Theres nothing wrong with being masculine, Poindexter told me. Its okay, he said, to be a manly man.

(35,272 posts)The headline had me chuckling. We see articles like this from time to time.
And I don't know if what they're saying is a coincidence or a trend.
So, if we're gonna have manly-men, make them hot too.
Will hot translate into electablility?
Too bad Bollywood actor John Abraham isn't available.
He lives in the wrong country.

Odds are, he will go into politics in India. Lots of celebs in India go into politics.
ETA: I read the article. The article references Johnny Garcia. I am familiar with the race. Johnny Garcia ran against John Lira and Maureen Galindo in the primary. Maureen was that flaky sex therapist, anti-sematism candidate, who received national attention.
I'm surprised John Lira didn't do that in the primary, but it is what it is. It is a fairly conservative district. I think Johnny Garcia has a better chance than John Lira. John Lira's a great guy, but not a very good campaigner. I don't think there was any effort to put a "manly man" in there. Johnny Garcia worked for the sheriff's dept. Our sheriff is popular here. A good chunk of this new district was formally Henry Cuellar's district. It's red leaning.

We're so superficial in this country. However, my post above states that lots of Bollywood actors transition into Indian politics. Heck, they continue to be in movies while they're serving in India's parliament. So maybe it isn't just the US.

(135,904 posts)I should pay any attention to him? Second, the misogyny in the Atlantic article is disgusting. "manly man" (with no table manners, apparently) is now openly THE criterion in the Democratic party? A throwback to some semi-mythical, longed-for time of male supremacy? Seriously?
Right now, the song "Ladies" sung by woodrow wilson in "SUFFS: The Musical" is playing in my head. The misogyny of his thinking apparently has not gone away.

(24,748 posts)masculine?
Because in my eyes a manly man does not have to be a bully to prove strength, actually it proves weakness and the Republican Party have a lot of them. Just look at shithole and Vance and the list is long.
Talarico explained it well beginning with caring.

(24,748 posts)manly men are sure not republicans at all.
Manly men are the likes of Obama, Biden, Carter, Clinton, and to date, Talarico, Brown, Cooper, Newsom, Waltz, and many more. Because they show compassion.

Amd it's a myth that women and minorities aren't allowed to be mad. It depends on what you're mad about.

(3,379 posts)It's very red but our own Sherrod Brown has been successful winning this district in the past and hopefully Ohio as a whole will be returning Brown back to the Senate.
This manly man stuff is the work of Morris Katz and Fight Agency. Yes, that Morris Katz. It seems silly because most voters are looking for plans and policy. MAGA are the ones obsessed with the manly man stuff. But if this ploy for wooing the MAGA who are looking for manly men works in this very red Republican Trumpy district I'll take it. Just don't push this manly man stuff all over the country and we're good.

Anyway...

(2,866 posts)Coming across as a "manly man" is just irritating.
And it helps to spell out what being a "manly man" would entail. A candidate who isn't polite? A candidate who hunts animals for fun? One with a military background? One who is boisterous, loud?
From my experience, "manly men" don't often have stellar histories, as Platner has shown.
So far from what I have seen of him, James Talarico has come across as gentle and able to express himself well. And Jon Ossoff also is able to resonate with voters. Others here who know more about them may later disabuse me of my positive notions of these two candidates, but as of right now they seem to be the kind of candidates we can use.
