General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsMy DU friends, what are your plans for this Fourth of July?
In the past I celebrated, I celebrated the birth of our country. This year... it feels like the death of our country.
It's not a celebration, it's a funeral.
I'm not planning to celebrate at all, & I'm going to do my best to avoid the local parades, fireworks, etc. I don't want to see any of it. It will be a day of mourning.

(28,549 posts)We probably wont see any fireworks, though. Its supposed to be foggy.
Hope Trump melts during his speech and the nobody is there to throw a bucket of cold water on him.
Im not going to let that creep ruin my day. My second son was born on the 4th of July so its been an extra special day for us. 🎉 Well have a good time drinking Margaritas.
Dont let MAGA ruin your day. Its not about Trump, as much as he wants to make it so.

(37,530 posts)it seems there are so many of us (me included) feeling blah, down, blue, pissed, etc and not in the "spirit"
but i think it's great that some of the real patriots (not the fake magat types) can get beyond the darkness of late and celebrate. i just don't have the energy or the heart for it. plus the weather is too hot and lots of storms. so...

(3 posts)We'll watch the 10am parade in town, hit a local park for a food vendor gathering, home to rest up a bit, then a block party for more food and shenanigans. 10pm park down at the fairgrounds for the city fireworks show. Should be a great day! 🍔 🎇🎆 🍺🍉 🇺🇸 😀

(18,043 posts)this week it falls on the Fourth. So we might have a special sort of lunch, maybe BBQ chicken and potato salad and baked beans. Some kind of typical holiday fare. Then we'll probably watch our murder shows, especially Dateline. Then I'll come home and have the cat in my lap as the fireworks are going off. So it sounds like a pretty good day.

(12,446 posts)with my Revolutionary War fighter plane just like George Washington did in 1776!!!

On a serious note, I never celebrate July 4th. I was saying last night what a stark contrast from teenage/young adult me to quinquagenarian me. I couldn't wait for July 4th as a teen and young adult. I also live near Niagara Falls State Park and the park shoots off fireworks every Friday or Saturday night during the summer at 10pm so there's nothing special about fireworks for me.
I watch this documentary that's on YouTube every July 4th called The White House Inside Story. It's worth the 1 hour 54 minutes to watch.

(115,327 posts)(the air/exhaust has to fit into a screened window, unlike last year so it may be challenging but I just can't wait any longer!). I am hoping the sounds of the portable a/c will mute any firecrackers---though they are intensely "verboten" this year (as last) due to wildfires. The ozone and wildfire particulates are so bad, I don't have any desire to go to a cookout or do so myself (though my sweet doggy girl would undoubtedly love a ribeye! LOL)
Later, listen to some good music or catch up on some streaming series or movies--or I suppose I could read a bunch of medical journals piling up the past weeks.
I will strive to go to bed early, regardless.
I'm betting there are some doing more interesting things... If so, enjoy!

(115,327 posts)--mostly in Southern Colorado. Still, the entire region gets the aftermath when there are multiple fires blowing particulates, and this intense heat with seasonal ozone issues only magnifies. Those with respiratory issues really suffer and those in the direct path of these fires (and sadly, that includes the wildlife) are in my thoughts, hopes, and prayers. Sadly, with climate change we will all face some hardships no matter where we live. I likewise feel for those on the East Coast without a way to cool off and who may face life-threatening conditions with this blast of heat.
For those who do wish to memorialize and commemorate the 4th (not really "celebrate" this year, I think), I wish you all a nice day. I can remember 1976 (especially the tall ships in NYC harbor)--despite being quite young-- when the nation really DID celebrate, so I am lucky.

Even if we grill or something, we do that so often in the summer, that it's not anything special on the 4th.
Our city did the fireworks last weekend, and I don't play with fireworks, so it should be pretty much a normal Saturday.

I have an ex who owes me 17 years worth of alimony from a divorce in fucking 2003 (daughter just found his address) and cant even afford to hire a lawyer to get on his arse and resume paying the debt.
This timeline offers nothing to celebrate and fighting traffic to watch shit blow up would hardly feel like a respiteunless it was the ex--especially because theres nothing even outside my life to celebrate.

Who knows at this point. Daughter is pissed because she tracked him down and hes bought a house listed on Zillow at $400K, and because he left me with a termite-ridden house and then failed to provide alimony, I lost it and weve been hanging on by the skin of our teeth since.
And hes on wifey #3 now, and has become a holy roller on top of this, which just adds to the irony. What does his Jeebus teach about stiffing your wife on alimony, I wonder

Wed usually drive down and park at STAR campus and watch from the parking lot.
