3. -Clinton says Today's GOP Would Never Have Stopped Nixon. They'd Have Enabled Him.

Nixon must have made a pact with devil. “Make sure you put in place a guy that can finish the job and a party that has the traitorous backbone. Those other wimps failed me.”

5. Richard Nixon Would Never Have Countenanced Donald Trump's.....

treason, grand larceny, and general destructiveness.

Nixon was a paranoiac, from a generation that defeated the Fascists (he served in the Navy in WWII as did JFK) and then saw "Commies" everywhere---the USSR had an "empire;" China; Cuba; SE Asia.

To Nixon, Haldeman, Erlichman, Dean, and more, the "weak" McGovern Democrats needed to be defeated in any way possible, lest the world capitulate to Communism. And it would be most helpful to know their political election strategies. Hence, the Watergate break-in.*

But HRC (when I read "Clinton," I think Bill, who was, after all, a President) was correct in implying that no Republican today would, as did Sen. Hugh Scott and two others, make the walk to the White House to tell---not just suggest to---Nixon, or Trump, that he had to resign.

*That another Nixon crime that the term "Watergate" comprises was back-dated Federal Income Tax, seems almost charmingly quaint in this era.

15. For all his faults & defects, which were many, Nixon never would've allowed himself to be a Russian agent.

10. "Watergate would be a 12-hour news story today. The idea that it would have taken down a presidency is crazy."

He's half right. Every scandal in our country's history would just be "a 12-hour news story today" compared to all the corrupt and illegal shit Trump has done as president. But what's really crazy is not that it took down Nixon, it's that Trump hasn't been held to account by his own party and corporate media.

Nixon wasn’t properly punished.

When conservatives talk about punishment as a message to others, again, they meant a message to them.

I mean, obviously being executed for accidentally whistling at a white girl (Emmett Till) does not send any message that wasn’t already known.

But the fraidy-cat conservatives do heed severe punishment and will avoid committing similar crimes. At least for a while, during which time they plot ways to get around those laws.

When a political criminal gets away without accountability or punishment because of some desire to "look forward, not backward" or "heal the country" , all they and their cohorts learn is that their are no consequences for their criming.

14. "...back then Republicans actually did something..." Not accurate!

Republicans in the administration and in Congress fought and fought for Nixon. It was all "party line" behavior that continues to this day.

It was only when Alex Butterfield (who just died) testified to the existence of the WH tapes that Republicans FINALLY caved. They couldn't lie and cover any more.

What still pisses me off is then Tennessee Senator Howard Baker famously asked: "What did he know and when did he know it?" as Republicans honestly trying to get to the bottom of the scandal. It was a great line! Republicans just wanted to discover the truth! For America!

But it wasn't!!! It was a tactic. The key word in his comment was the word "When." Baker was looking for a way to say that the Watergate break-in happened before Nixon knew about it. By 'those people!' Renegades!!! So, if Nixon didn't know about it until AFTER it happened, by rogue agents, then Nixon was innocent!! No impeachment. GOP does not burn to the ground.

Barry Goldwater, Senate Minority Leader Hugh Scott, and House Minority Leader John Rhodes, all defended Nixon constantly. And then they couldn't. THEY got caught covering Nixon's ass. They were out of options. Impeachment was a matter of days and they didn't have the votes in the House or Senate.
