I discovered another purpose of AI, other than the crap videos online and making the very few extremely rich.

AI voice cloning scams are becoming widespread where a caller sounds like a loved one in distress, followed by an urgent demand for money.
Americans lost 893 million to AI related scams in 2025, including phishing emails and romance scams. And that's just what has been reported.
It's the birth of a brand new industry.

Yes. And scam artists started doing that with AI a few years ago, as soon as it was possible. A couple highplainsdem 5 hrs ago #1

of threads I posted in early 2023 on a news story about AI voices that could get access to bank accounts, and an FTC warning to AI companies:

Article from Vice on breaking into voice-authenticated bank account with AI-generated voice

The FTC just issued a new warning: "Chatbots, deepfakes, and voice clones: AI deception for sale"
https://www.democraticunderground.com/100217746908

Wow. Just discovered the Trump regime removed that Biden-admin page from the FTC website. But of course they're scammers themselves and love AI.

I've posted a lot here about the ways AI can be used, and if you use the Search forum feature at the top of the board page (not the DuckDuckGo search in the upper right corner) and type in AI for the word you're searching for, my name for post author, and leave it set for thread titles, you'll find many of my posts on AI (not all). But you'll probably have to search only 6 months of posts at a time to not go over 250 search results. There have been a LOT of news stories and studies about AI's flaws and the harm it does, and I've tried to keep DUers aware of those.

I never answer the phone unless I recognise the caller and I never respond to emails unless I recognise the sender. And I never answer the door unless I'm expecting someone.
Helluva world.
