CA-11: Unions could be labor champion Connie Chan's (D) ace in the hole

Supervisor Connie Chan’s campaign to succeed retiring U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi in Congress has not raised anywhere near the amount of cash that her top competitors have collected.

But what Chan does have that might help her secure at least second place in the June 2 primary is the support of a wide swath of labor unions with whom she has longstanding relationships and whose cause she claims as her own.

“That is actually the reality of our campaign — that it is a testament to the power of labor,” Chan said in an interview. “They are invested in it. Working people are invested in it.”

Chan has racked up endorsements from numerous sources, including the San Francisco Labor Council, which includes more than 150 unions; the California Federation of Labor Unions; and SEIU California, which rescinded its co-endorsement of state Sen. Scott Wiener after he came out in opposition to Proposition D, a union-backed measure on the June ballot that would increase The City’s Overpaid Executive Tax.
