DU'ers.
Republican leaders were planning to ram through their ICE and Border Patrol funding bill by the end of this week so they could fly out of DC and enjoy the long weekend. Instead, the bill is stuck in the Senate, the GOP is in disarray, and Congress is in recess until June.
This is great news. The more time this takes, the more we can divide Republicans. Heading into this week, there were already cracks showing in the GOP caucus -- thanks to constituent pressure over Trumps ballroom, the amount of funding for ICE and Border Patrol without any guardrails, and concerns about family separation provisions in the bill.
Then, public fury over Trumps historically-corrupt $1.8 billion slush fund for his family and criminal allies opened up those cracks and caused the entire effort to shatter.
Republicans know its terrible politics to be throwing billions at out of control agencies, gaudy ballrooms, and payoffs to Trumps allies as Americans struggle to afford housing, food, and gas. Theyre feeling the heat, and that pressure has been enough to stall the bill, but the fight isnt over.
When Congress returns on June 1, Republicans will get another chance to pass this bill. So its time to turn up the pressure to make every vulnerable Republican politically terrified to support this heinous bill (and maybe even convince some retiring Republicans to vote their consciences, if theyve got any shred of one left).
Before you sign off for the holiday, please:
1️⃣ Call your Republican senator(s) and demand they vote no on any additional funding for ICE and Border Patrol.
2️⃣ Call your Republican representative and demand the same. Then, encourage your friends and neighbors to call their Members of Congress as well.
3️⃣ Consider pitching in to help fund our work. Republicans have been trying to ram through additional funding for ICE and Border Patrol since January. Indivisible has been fighting back every step of the way, but our grassroots organizing depends on grassroots funding. Please pitch in if you can to make sure we have the resources to continue this fight.
DU'er -- enjoy this win and enjoy the long weekend. Well be back next week with more actions you can take to make sure ICE doesnt get a single penny more.
In solidarity,
Indivisible Team
P.S. -- With Members of Congress heading back to their states and districts, this is the perfect time to organize a district office visit or protest in your community. Check out our map of existing events and our district office visit guide, then click here to register your event.
