I lack the patience to have a conversation with someone who is voting against their own self-interests

The problem with a conversation is that, in its ideal sense, it's about two people with potentially opposing viewpoints having a calm and rational exchange, which may or may not involve one or both having a new perspective at the end.

FOLKS...I am assuming some of you feel the same way...I have decided that my life is TOO SHORT to spend it listening to people "explain" why they voted for Trump three times, ESPECIALLY WHEN...as in a story I posted a few days ago on DU...they say things like "I voted for him three times, and I made a mistake, but would I vote for him again? I dunno."

And I don't want to run down the list of people who DID clearly vote against their own self-interests because I don't want to violate the "no bigotry or insensitivity" rule.

So imagine a MOUSE. A cute, adorable little whiskered dickens, living in your house. And outside of the hole that he uses for his front door is a big sign, "MICE FOR HOUSE CATS."

Because really, he's a mouse, and the house cat would only protect him and never even think of hurting, or eating him...right?

The more Trump hurts his voters, the more they're speaking out and saying they "might have" made a mistake, and when asked if they'd do it all over again, far to many of them are saying "I don't know" or "maybe."

So I don't have the answers for the midterms. There are two options:

1). Full steam ahead, under the assumption that we either can't reason with Trump voters, or that if we do, we have to spend countless hours hugging them and telling them that we understand them, or

2). We just decide to become full-time counselors, and we let them vent, and we sit and patiently listen to all of the reasons why they felt that Trump was Jesus Christ, returned to earth to walk among us again in human form.

Maybe there's a middle ground in there somewhere. If there is, I haven't seen it.

1. Tell them their vote has already been recorded because they voted three times.

No need to tax yourself, idiot. You did your deed.

2. I don't bother any more. I know that some day in some way Trump will hurt most of his supporters.

If they still don't turn against him, then that's on them. They have chosen to support him, let them pay the price and get hurt. Maybe then, and only then, they will examine their reasons for supporting him and reconsider their choice of political parties. They are adults and it's up to them to decide.

3. I could be wrong, but what I'm seeing is remorse over what he's done to THEM, but NEVER about OTHERS.

Maybe those stories are out there, carried by smaller and more low-key news outlets, because they're not sexy clickbait.

I just see the woe is me stuff, I thought he was my friend and understood me and was fighting for me and he hurt me stories.

Let's say Kamala Harris was elected. Let's say she accomplishes something, like taxing billionaires, and all of a sudden we have all of these hospitals and veterans centers and homeless shelters and every kid's getting a nutritious free lunch at school.

IF I VOTED FOR HARRIS, I WOULD ABSOLUTELY TAKE CREDIT FOR THAT.

"This happened because I VOTED FOR HER, along with all of the others who did the same."

Honest to God, I can't recall seeing any accounts of a MAGAt saying "I regret that I voted for him, and I regret that he hurt me, but I also regret how he hurt so many other people."

It's all ME, ME, ME, ME, just like Trump himself.

And I'd never fully turn my back on anyone trying to navigate their way out of the darkness.

I just won't indulge the "Maybe President Trump doesn't REALIZE he's hurting us."

A person can do all KINDS of things when APATHY clears the way for AMBITION.

4. Trump's ardent supporters are the equivalent of cult members.

We are never going to succeed by trying to convince cult members that they have been taken by a charlatan (Trump). We have to focus on rescuing everyone else before we worry about the true believers (cult members).

5. You are absolutely right, IMO! We can't waste our time trying to reason with these people.

And "I told you so" will never win them over to our side. Many of them are what I call "the religiously insane." If they choose to drive off a cliff, then it's not up to me to stop them...

6. I agree - we have to be laser focused on everyone else (which is still a herculean task).

The cult members will either change on their own or drive off the cliff.

7. Ask them to name the 3 branches of government

I use this technique to avoid discussions with those who have no conception of how government works. It also has the added benefit of showing their ignorance in real time in a somewhat gentle way.

Trump supporters aren't a monolith as our support down ticket in 2024 was higher than the support for the Harris campaign. Just because some Trump supporters aren't reachable, and just because you don't have the patience to reach out to them (and no judgement on that) doesn't mean others can't do outreach to some they do find potentially reachable.

It's like we likely can't get to zero homelessness because some people won't take medication, or are too far gone due to drug abuse or other anti-social behavior. Doesn't mean we throw our hands up and say we therefore can't do anything about homelessness.

And sincerely I mean no judgement if you aren't in a position to reach out to Trump supporters. You can do other things like helping to get our voters out, or whatever fills your cup in terms of making a difference in your community. All that stuff is good and necessary. I'm not doing much outreach to Trump supporters because I live in a city that went strongly for Harris in a state that went strongly for Harris and I can really only think of one probable Trump supporter that I know in real life. We all have different strengths and skills to help. I mostly volunteer with Special Olympics and food rescue. I donate to animal rescue but don't volunteer with it because it breaks my heart. I simply couldn't handle it even living in a state that has mostly or entirely no kill shelters.

have already figured it out for themselves and publicly repudiated him.

After 10 years if they can't see reality, nothing we can say or do will change their mind. 1/3 of this nation is lost.

In my experience, they don't really hear
anything I have to say.

All they have is this explosive kind of anger
and hate.

Separation of church and state, forget it.
"We're the majority, and the bible is our
book," they say.

I haven't spoken to them in years.

He’s a postal carrier and in a union. I can hear i blaming Obama and Biden when they privatize the post office and destroy their union!

And i doubt despite this happening he will remain entrenched in the maga cult.
