They are sane-washing a white Christian nationalist group, making them look like decent people who are misunderstood.
Just when you think CBS has hit rock bottom, they go even lower.

(6,561 posts)I go to bed too early to watch when it airs. About six weeks ago, my cable carrier (Xfinity) began displaying a message that it wasn't carrying CBS anymore because the Scripps company wanted too much in contract negotiations. I still don''t have CBS.

That's the point of having separation of Church (fantasy) and State (reality). Thank you for your attention to this matter.

(1,952 posts)True, honest, reliable news. Now CBS is just a mouthpiece for the rabid right. Wow, how the mighty have fallen.

Frozen for all time in my memory is Walter Cronkite trying valiently not to lose control of his emotions, taking off his glasses and stating that President Kennedy had died in Dallas.Grim Chieftain
(1,952 posts)It's seared into my memory. Wow. To have presidents like JFK again and news anchors like Walter Cronkite again...

(1,242 posts)This is Colbert's last month.
I will not be watching any replacement shows.
BTW, if Paramount and WB Discovery are broken up at a later date, Ellison will make a huge profit.

(9,140 posts)...I didn't see the episode trying to make these guys look decent or misunderstood. I saw them being presented as opportunists who use natural disasters as photo ops and recruitment opportunities while trying to soften their image by posting on social media about the "help" they offer only to the affected white population. I think the episode could and should have been longer and dived a bit deeper but I didn't see it as sane-washing these guys. I think it's good that people know that this is going on.
Dr. T
(683 posts)gave them oxygen, is reason enough to question the integrity of the story. I saw the first five minutes then changed channels. Leslie Stahl failed to challenge the bastard leader of the cult on a several occasions. The true mission of these "fine citizens" was not thoroughly examined or exposed. Some might call it a fair and balanced story. I call it an attempt to normalize white Christian nationalists.

(9,140 posts)You say that you changed the channel after 5 minutes, so I don't know how you could assess what Stahl did or didn't do. As I said, I think that the segment could have been more in depth, but I actually watched the whole thing and I didn't see it as simply giving these guys airtime or oxygen but giving us INFORMATION, even if that information comes from a network that we don't like.
Dr. T
(683 posts)by interviewing Charlie Manson and allowing him to drone on about the good work they do? Did CBS expose The People's Temple in Jonestown, Guyana by interviewing Jim Jones as he was innocently working out?
I don't care what the scum of the Earth think about themselves.
I understand what you're saying. Expose the evil from within the evil. But, we're going to have to agree to disagree on this one. It's all good. The cool thing about the DU is the diversity of opinions. It's how we learn.

(9,140 posts)It was made quite clear that these guys are not doing what they do out of altruism or a simple desire to do good works. It was also reported that their presence in these disaster areas hamper efforts by local authorities and also that they spread conspiracy theories and anti-government propaganda. There was one particular guy that they focused on who was quite open about his white supremacist leanings and whom the segment informed us had not even gone to any of the affected areas to offer any help. He's basically just a white supremacist influencer. You probably won't watch the segment but I think you should.

(2,567 posts)After watching it, Im glad it was aired, because it exposed these white supremacists for who they are: they exploit people in a crisis situation to offer assistance at a price. But they only offer to help white folks, and it has to be videotaped.
