I'm beginning to wonder if the problem isn't with the media owners, but more the reporters. erronis 16 hrs ago #2

That was a favorite saying of one of the local news producers I worked with.

Hard to forget.

“The bridge that DIDN’T collapse. Ever wonder why, even when it’s loaded with rush hour traffic twice a day? Well, did you know that…”

Or

“Meet Rufus. The dog that DIDN’T bite. This dog finally found a home with hyper-active children who swarmed him and pulled his ears and pawed him and even tried to ride him, day in and day out, and he never even growled…”

The challenge is always 1) what is it/what happened; and 2) how to make it interesting.

There’s usually SOME sort of human interest tidbit that can be found if you’re creative and don’t mind doing a little digging.

This toon made me think about why the cameras, microphones, notepads, attention is usually aimed at the sensational and jarring, versus the normal and quotidian.

Sure, the media bosses want eyeballs and clicks and sales. And I'm sure there's a mantra about bleeding and leading.

But I wonder if a lot of reporters in the field want to have eye-catching reportage, get their bylines on page 1, get invited on those important cable channels. Almost a hunger for attention - sometimes taking them into dangerous war zones.

reminds me of one of my biggest frustrations........ you can find a million articles about how "trump voters feel" about whatever, but they never make a point of going out and asking Harris (or Clinton) voters how they feel about anything......
