Three dead in suspected virus outbreak on Atlantic cruise ship

Three people have died after a suspected hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship sailing in the Atlantic Ocean, the World Health Organization (WHO) has told the BBC.

One case of hantavirus has been confirmed, with five more suspected cases under investigation, it said. One British national aged 69 is in intensive care in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The outbreak was reported aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship, which was travelling from Argentina to Cape Verde.

Hantavirus infections are usually linked to environmental exposure, such as contact with urine or faeces from infected rodents, but in rare cases can spread between people, leading to severe respiratory illness.

Foster Mohale, a spokesperson for South Africa's health ministry, earlier told the BBC that at least two people had died.

The MV Hondius is run by Dutch-based tour company Oceanwide Expeditions

Dutch ships are usually sparkling clean, so this may be a human spread outbreak

No one can pay me enough to be locked up with so many strangers for longer than a four hour flight. I don’t even do cross the pond flights these days. No sah! I pass.😀

Besides the fact that they are floating Petri dishes, there's this---why would I want to be trapped out in the middle of the ocean with a bunch of people I wouldn't want to be stuck with on land?

I’m not denying the risks for an instant

For some of us, it’s a very relieving, esoteric experience to leave land and all your cares behind for a finite period in which one and a partner, friends, or even alone are free to consume alcohol, if you enjoy that, without being concerned that you have responsibilities other than to remain civil. To eat at any time a variety of foods which include specialty restaurants, to enjoy the tranquility sailing over the open ocean, to lounge inside or out, listen to music, read a book, see a show, commune with others, gamble in a casino, have late night food and drink, walk endlessly, exercise at Will, play cards, be involved in group activities…OR NOT.

It is not for everyone, that is for certain and no one will ever tie you up and put you on a ship. But there is a reason that hundreds of thousands of us love the experience as there are many millions who enjoy amusement park rides and others who wouldn’t dream of participating.

And I didn’t even mention the ports and touring islands and other areas.

We stay at a resort, drink if we want to, take side trips, sleep in the same bed most nights (unless we want to overnight on one of the other islands), enjoy the food and the shopping and the sun, and come back relaxed and tanned without the other hassles.

It’s the metaphysical aspect of being off land that is appealing to some of us.

I enjoy V.I. Immensely. Stopped there a lot on many cruises over 45 years.

But I could easily enjoy myself just sitting with a view of the ocean and a good book.

I also feel like sleeping would be comfortable with the movement over the ocean.

we are seeing human to human transmission of Hantavirus. Human to human transmission was through to have occured with ANDV in Chile and Argentina, but published research in the past few years has found no evidence of human to human spread in those outbreaks.

We've seen hantavirus clusters/outbreaks before. Doesn't mean H2H transmission.

Very odd for a ship I believe. You see this in the US southwest where people are cleaning out nests etc from outbuildings. Being dry helps it become airborne. They must have had a substantial infestation and perhaps in the ventilation?
