Trump asked people to imagine a scenario where "all of a sudden you're stuck with a man who's a moron," triggering immediate mockery from critics who said that that's already the case.
Trump made the comment while speaking in The Villages, Florida, on Friday. He was plugging his proposed cognitive test, saying it would screen out idiots.
"I mean, you get a guy who gets in there, he's got a good line of crap. He gets in, and all of a sudden, you're stuck with a man who's a moron, said Trump. "This is not good."
He then took a swipe at his predecessor.
Commentators quickly called out what they saw as irony.
"That would be bad if that ever happened," Meidas Touch editor-in-chief Ron Filipkowski sarcastically said on X.
"We know. He's president right now," quipped @DianeSevenay.
"Amazing," the Tennessee Holler posted. "He must be feeling like people think hes a real dummy to be talking about this so much lately."
"OH. MY. GOD," wrote the account @AntiToxicPeople. "No words imaginable for the lack of self awareness."
"He doesn't know he's talking about himself," @GeoffBrown82 posted. "Hes totally clueless."
"You're a [expletive] moron," @AesPolitics1 wrote.

(3,923 posts)Talking to people in the Villages. Basically telling them that they are stupid if they have trouble with a cognitive exam.
Such disrespect.

He's got a 6th grade vocabulary, but his mental maturity is behind that curve.

(20,751 posts)When I retired, I looked into buying a place there, but after seeing the prices they wanted for almost nothing and taking in the current residents who lived there, I got in the car and fled.
After living in blood-red Florida for 3 years I fled the state as well. The culture shock was too much to take. I'd finally found something to which I couldn't adapt.

(20,751 posts)This was 26 years ago, BTW. Things in The Villages are even worse now, although I've read that there is a Democratic contingent in place now. They probably get their houses egged and crosses burned in their yards quite often, though.
I visited many people in Florida over the years prior to my retirement, and thought it would be a great place to dodge upstate New York winters, but visiting there and living there are diametrically opposed. I'll just put a few more layers of clothing on and stick it out in New York, thank you. 😉

Florida politics have always been a cesspool of graft, payoffs, and shady dealings, even under the Dixiecrats. If the citizens of Florida only cared enough to find out what's really going on in Tallahassee.

(26,321 posts)His brother is deceased now but his SIL is still living there. She loves it. But I'm not surprised by that.
Back during the Civil Rights movement in the 60s and 70s, she researched emigration to Australia because she heard that they only accepted White immigrants. Her husband told her that Australia has Black Indigenous people so she lost interest.
Her sister's husband had a half Vietnamese daughter from his service time there before he was married. The girl had tracked him down and contacted him. Her mother was not in her life for reasons I don't remember. He confirmed that she was his daughter and then wanted his wife to adopt her and make her part of the family in the US. His wife was OK with it, but the wife's sister (my ex's SIL) told her that she should oppose the adoption. The SIL actually said, "That girl doesn't need an American family. She's probably got special privileges right where she is because she's half American. She's just looking for money because she thinks all Americans are rich."
But of course the opposite was true. The US had not yet left Vietnam at the time and being half American was a liability to her, not a privilege. She needed a stable, safe environment. Her Americsn father and his wife wanted to do the right thing by her.
So that SIL of my ex is right at home in the Villages as an enthusiastic MAGA.

(42 posts)Not a good thing in my opinion. Trump thrives on the 24/7 attention. Take that away and he becomes nothing but an irrelevant bloviator and a pitiful circus clown. For a decade now, his opposition have been feeding into and playing Trump's game. Just the way he wants it. In fairness, ignoring the ridiculous clown and his antics isn't easy, but without the attention he feeds on he's nothing but a corrupt and lying big mouth of the dime a dozen variety.
Good publicity is preferable to bad, but from a bottom-line perspective, bad publicity is sometimes better than no publicity at all. Controversy, in short, sells.
