Sen Welch (D-VT): Schumer isn't the leader when it comes to where the Democratic Party is on what's going on with Israel

“Senator Schumer is not the leader when it comes to where the Democratic Party is on what's going on with Israel, in Lebanon, in Iran. And the war is extremely unpopular… This war is a killer… it's not going to make us more secure, but it is going to make a lot of Americans more poor.”

In this ‘Mehdi Unfiltered’ interview, Mehdi Hasan speaks with Vermont Senator Peter Welch who urges Democrats to reject AIPAC’s influence, taking a stand agains the pro-Israeli lobby. He calls for a change in US foreign policy following Israel’s violent actions in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran.

Co-sponsor of the Justice for Hind Rajab Act, Senator Welch has long been an outspoken critic of US complicity in Israel’s genocidal actions and Trump’s illegal war in Iran. He was also one of 40 senators across the nation who voted to block the sale of weapons to Israel, signaling a shift as the Democratic Party slowly distances itself from Israel.

Mehdi and Welch also discuss Joe Biden’s legacy, Democratic leadership and Trump’s threats to upcoming midterm elections in this interview. This panel was published on zeteo.com last week. The 7 Dems who voted to allow the aid

Bold names below are names (of the 7 on this vote) too often seen (some more than others) IMHO when it comes to bad votes (in general, on a number of issues).

Yellow bold names are the ones most likely (of these 7 below) to be seen when it comes to consistently making bad votes and taking bad stances, IMHO.

Blumenthal (D-CT) (disappointing to see his name here)
Coons (D-DE)
Cortez Masto (D-NV)
Fetterman (D-PA)

Killing of Hind Rajab

Hind Rajab, graduating from kindergarten, later killed by Israeli forces at the age of 5

Hind Rami Iyad Rajab (3 May 2018 – 29 January 2024) was a five-year-old Palestinian girl in the Gaza Strip who was killed by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) during the Gaza war, which also killed six of her family members and two paramedics coming to her rescue.

Rajab and her family were fleeing Gaza City when their vehicle was shelled by the IDF, killing her uncle, aunt and three cousins, with Rajab and another cousin surviving and contacting the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) to ask for help while noting that they were being attacked by an Israeli tank. The cousin was later also killed and Rajab was left stranded in the vehicle for hours on the phone, as paramedics from PRCS attempted to rescue her. Both Rajab and the paramedics were later also found dead on 10 February after an Israeli withdrawal.

Israel claimed that there were not any troops present in the neighborhood and denied carrying out the attack. However, this was refuted by The Washington Post and Sky News's investigations relying on satellite imagery and visual evidence, which concluded that a number of Israeli tanks were indeed present and one had likely fired 335 rounds on the car that Rajab and her family had been in, with tank operators being able to see that the car had civilians including children in it. The Forensic Architecture investigation also concluded that an Israeli tank had also likely attacked the ambulance that came for Rajab.

In the aftermath of the killing, Western media outlets were criticized for their coverage of the incident, including for not attributing who killed Rajab and for their adultification of her. American student protesters occupied and renamed Hamilton Hall in her honor at Columbia University, drawing increased attention to the incident.

From Dallas to Gaza: How JFK’s Assassination Was Good for Zionist Israel

Kennedy wanted to steer the Jewish Zionists away from the racist, militaristic and ultra-nationalistic impulses which have led to where we are today.

Excerpt…

Kennedy was not biased in favor of Israel

The Kennedy administration sought good relations with both Israel and the Arab nations. Kennedy aimed to extend US influence throughout the Middle East, including with nations friendly with the Soviet Union and at odds with NATO partners.

JFK personally supported Arab and African nationalism. As a senator in 1957, he criticized the Eisenhower administration for supporting and sending weapons to France in their war against the Algerian independence movement. In a 9,000-word presentation to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he criticized “western imperialism” and called for the US to support Algerian independence. Algerian President Ben Bella, whom France had tried to assassinate and considered far too radical by many in NATO, was given a huge and impressive welcome to the White House.

Snip…

In 1960, when Kennedy was campaigning for the presidency, he spoke at the Zionists of America Convention. He made complimentary remarks about Israel but also expressed the need for friendship with all the people of the Middle East. He said the US should “act promptly and decisively against any nation in the Middle East that attacks its neighbor” and “The Middle East needs water, not war; tractors, not tanks; bread, not bombs.”

Kennedy frankly told the Zionists, “I cannot believe that Israel has any real desire to remain indefinitely a garrison state surrounded by fear and hate.” By maintaining objectivity and neutrality on the Israeli-Arab conflict, Kennedy wanted to steer the Jewish Zionists away from the racist, militaristic, and ultra-nationalistic impulses that have led to where we are today.

Kennedy wanted the Zionist Lobby to follow the rules

The second difference in Kennedy’s policy is regarding Zionist lobbying on behalf of Israel. Under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), organizations that promote or lobby on behalf of a foreign government are required to register and account for their finances and activities. Under Attorney General Robert Kennedy, the Department of Justice (DOJ) instructed the American Zionist Council (AZC) to register as agents of a foreign country. AZC is the parent organization of the American Israel Public Affairs Council (AIPAC).

As documented in detail here, on 21 November 1962, the Assistant Attorney General wrote to them, “The receipt of such funds from the American sections of the Jewish Agency for Israel constitutes the (American Zionist) Council an agent of a foreign principal... the Council’s registration is requested.”
