OP
This is a complicated issue. In the navy at least, long deployments are the norm.

(33,910 posts)1. From the article: ... Conscientious objectors
One of the most time-intensive ways to separate is to apply to become a conscientious objector, meaning someone who has decided they are morally against war.
...
The application process is long. It involves a written statement, a psych evaluation, an interview with a military chaplain and an investigating officer assigned to each case, according to those familiar with it. It almost certainly takes months, even stretching into years.
But submitting an application means a service member has to be removed from duties they object to immediately so it's also one way to keep from being imminently deployed.
...
Many service members don't even really know that applying as a conscientious objector, or CO, is an option.

I shared this because someone had a question about the process here recently.
Thanks so much for sharing this, Dunc.

Trump burns a hole through anything he touches and in this case he has Hegseths wrecking ball help. Some members of the military may be able to live with what Trump and Hegseth have done but many can not. I hope requesting CO status will be an answer for some.
Thanks for posting this.

No normal people.

And chronic under staffing leads to very long hours with insufficient rest time. It's absolutely brutal and some even affect
suicidal thoughts just to get out. It's been this way for several years - not just under T.
