America is stuck in Purgatory.

There can be no progress in Purgatory. Every day is Groundhog Day, just like the day before. We cannot move forward because the people that hold the key are one step from the fire and they do not dare to make a move. They could take a step back but they are fearful, for their careers and their lives.

Rather than change, we wait.

Purgatory is about being deprived of what you need, in order to atone for sins, but not being worthy of damnation..

It implies guilt, and sanction, but ultimately moving on after a period of pain. It's finite and purposeful.

It isn't a second chance, but a sanction then release for the flawed but worthy.

I'll have to think on this one some more...
