Facebook is starting a community notes program. I think you might have to sign up for it. Basically, it allows someone to interject their opinion before you post. I came across it the other day on threads without realizing what it was. The post I was responding to remarked about something Trump claimed, which I knew wasn't true. So my response was, "Trump is a chronic liar." When I went to post, up comes a pop up that said something like, Before you post, be aware that many have posted similar remarks. To improve the quality of the discussion, would you reconsider your remarks?"
I ignored it and posted my original thoughts.
Point is, this is a valuable tool for the MAGAs who want to control the direction of a discussion. So be prepared.

I only wade into for family and community info and then get back out. The less we use it, the weaker it becomes.

(24,280 posts)It's all fake stuff now. Like 80% of the content is AI on my feed. You have to scroll through pages of nonsense to find one post from a friend or family member.
I am kind of an introvert, I don't stay in contact with too many friends, but I do like that FB lets me keep up on their lives, makes me still connected somehow and I need that. I feel like if I got rid of FB, I would lose contact with several dozen people I want to stay connected to. I'm not going to reach out and start collecting phone numbers, and I am not on much else for social media. But I am thinking of leaving regardless.

(104 posts)Why I am realistic about limiting my use, not boycotting/leaving. There is still a shred of value.

(24,280 posts)Zero AI content, extremely limited ads. If when you opened FB the scroll only moved from someone you know posting something, that would be something I would pay for. The concept of staying up on the lives of friend and family is valuable to me.
I got rid of IG. I got rid of Twitter when Elmo bought it. I got rid of threads. I barely use Bluesky. DU, Reddit, and a sports site are my primary social media spaces. I miss what FB used to be.

And, yes, Facebook's hobby groups are the reason why I stay on.

(4,646 posts)right when the flood of AI slop got much worse.
At this rate FB will soon be as bad as Reddit.

(52,449 posts)Double check. You may have to go through other options before these windows show up.
I don't remember the options, but I do know I am satisfied about squashing the sites and never see them again..

(4,646 posts)Now to block you have to go to the profile or page of the poster and block from there.

(38,682 posts)I have one person I regularly snooze for 30 days to see if she has lost her obsession with amplifying trans hostile posts. Invariably the first post I see when she wakes up is another repost about "men" in women's sports.
She woke up about a week ago and is back on snooze.
They may have moved the controls, but the functionality is definitely still there.

(4,646 posts)20 days ago, Reddit r/Facebook:
...
I cant seem to snooze for 30 days anymore. Have friends whose political posts I dont want to see, but who are otherwise friends I want to keep. I dont want to unfollow them - I just periodically want to avoid their rants. That option has disappeared.
...
Almost two months unable to snooze anyone. Just another reason why Facebook sucks. I think its targeted because my wife has the snooze option.

So some still have the option but I am among those who don't.

(17,612 posts)That's why I've stayed on Facebook. The majority of rescuers that I know stay connected through Facebook. I couldn't tell you why that is, but it just is.

(373 posts)There are groups for cat lovers (me), organists and choirmasters (me), iguana lovers (me), Galapagos lovers (me), castles in Europe, organs in Europe. You name it. There are a lot of interest groups. It's up to you to find your niche. But to say that Fb is cancer, sewage, is ridiculous. You haven't taken the time to search out the groups that interest you.

(6 posts)just recently for something I didn't do... No recourse except the "appeal" which was the same as the ban. No explanation just "you're out". It was the only way I had of keeping in touch with some people so I have no way to get ahold of them... I agree it CAN be a swamp.

(4,346 posts)How is it controlling the narrative? Seems like its just telling you a lot of people said the same thing.

(52,449 posts)The point is, I go out of my way not to have to listen to right-wing talking points. You might say, you're on a website that does the same.
TxGuitar
(4,346 posts)What do you mean? How are right wing talking points involved here? You posted on a FB post, it asked you if you are sure you want to post the same thing everyone else is, you said yes, your post posted. Whats the issue?
Baitball Blogger
(52,449 posts)Some people would have been intimidated. I even hesitated for a second. The result of that comment would have stopped me from calling Trump a liar. So I see it as an attempt to influence the algorithms in his favor.
TxGuitar
(4,346 posts)Are you saying the OP of your FB thread you're talking about asked you that question? Please spell it out for me, becuase it sounds like you posted something on a thread, the system asked you if you still wanted to post a redundant comment, you said yes and the comment posted. How are MAGAs doing this?
Baitball Blogger
(52,449 posts)Wish you the best.

(4,346 posts)especially in being able to succinctly say what you mean. Nothing you've said has made any sense. And you seem to refuse to boil it down to a point. We don't need this kind of hair on fire nonsense.
Have a great weekend.
