Gulf states did not want Donald Trump to go to war with Iran. Now they are deeply anxious that he has stopped.
Far from heralding a new golden age in the Middle East, as the US president has claimed, a premature, muddled ceasefire has left an undefeated Iran in control of the economically critical Strait of Hormuz, officials and business leaders have warned.
By failing to finish what he started, they say, Mr Trump risks making the Gulf more dangerous and unpredictable, alienating investors and undermining stability. Gulf states feel both more exposed and more dependent on a United States they fear is abandoning them to deal with a crisis not of their own making.
It was a mistake to start this war, said one politically connected businessman in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), reflecting a widely shared sentiment. It is an even bigger mistake to stop it.
