I don't have a clue but I can guess there are three possibilities:

1. Trump is kissing the ass of his Israeli buddies.

2. The administration is convinced that Iran poses a significant threat to the US with nuclear weapons and the means to deliver them some time in the future.

3. Trump is playing the long game against China's control of rare earth resources by gaining leverage with controlling Venezuela and Iranian oil.

However, it is always futile to guess the reasons for war. I'm an aging Boomer. The US has been at war in some way or another ever since I was born in 1947. I can't even tell you the reason for the war I fought in or the one my son fought. So what the hell do I know?
