Elizabeth Warren endorses Graham Platner in Maine Senate race

https://www.wbur.org/news/2026/03/19/elizabeth-warren-endorse-graham-platner-maine-senate-mills

U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren has endorsed oyster farmer Graham Platner in the race for Senate in Maine.

Platner, a progressive candidate facing off against Gov. Janet Mills in the Democratic primary, has racked up a string of endorsements from fellow progressives in the party.

The winner of the primary will likely take on Sen. Susan Collins in the general election. Collins is a moderate Republican who has held the seat since 1997 and fended off tough challenges in the past.

"Graham Platner is going to flip Maine and then actually deliver change for working people in the Senate," Warren, of Massachusetts, said in a press release announcing her endorsement. "He’s a combat veteran, an oyster farmer, and has inspired people with his populist agenda for a government on the side of working families––not the billionaires and giant corporations."

I'm not in his camp, I don't think he will cut it when it comes down to who's going to win.

Did she believe his story that his tattoo was "just a cool looking skull" rather than a Nazi symbol? Or did she just not care one way or the other? Personally, I care... I think it's forever disqualifying.

I really believe that the party has to do a better job vetting candidates. Platner’s explanation for his past behavior has been incredibly inadequate and the typical Bernie play of blaming corporate dems or the establishment is a cop out and ridiculous. We never made Fetterman answer for his problematic past because he was a “progressive” and now we are stuck. I still think Janet is the better candidate and has shown the ability to win a statewide race. This move towards kicking out older politicians just for younger is not what I want especially when Platner hasn’t shown much other than bash the party.

Admittedly, I haven't looked into this race very much and only ever really hear about it on DU - which has a verrrrry specific take on it.

I would not have expected this.

Huh. Glancing at the polls, he's still up a little bit.

I guess Maine Democrats don't care about various things as much as social media do.

A near octogenarian aiming for a first term is crazy, even by our modern geriatric political standards.

I think, after the past decade of previous generations abjectly refusing to give up power, voters are going to start drawing some lines.

That AOC/Connolly thing and how it all shook out? Resonated. And generated a lot of resentment in people. Not even because they were particularly progressive or partial to her - but because the audacity of power to be that brazen was a slap in the face.

I think Mills is inheriting a bit of that feeling.

and I would still be voting for her over him. On top of all of the obvious problematic things he said and the NAZI tattoo, he said stuff about rural voters that will bite us on the behind in the most rural state in the entire nation.

Granted, I haven't been following closely, but I just assumed once Mills entered she'd walk away with the nomination given his problems and her stature. At the time of reporting, it seemed somewhat foolish and hopeless to remain in the race given the strength and longevity of the condemnation.

And yet . . .

It's just interesting. Curious to know what factors are driving it. I think it's mainly age. He's an asshole, but again, almost 80 for a first term? When we are already having a vigorous conversation about the party's problems with passing the torch, culminating in 2024's terrible decisions?

Political parties that are not functioning well open the door to bad candidates. "Not more of this shit" can be a potent factor among voters.

until after the primary, but apparently endorsing a guy with a nazi tattoo, among other gross baggage, isn't a deal breaker.

So Platner's got the endorsements of New England's two most progressive senators.
