Sam Stein and Jonathan Cohn talk with Therese Vogel about the return of measles. Therese shares the story of her sister, who contracted measles as a child and suffered permanent brain damage shaping the rest of her life and why that led her to join Grandparents for Vaccines.
They discuss why vaccine skepticism has risen, how outbreaks are spreading again as vaccination rates fall, and why many Americans have forgotten how dangerous these diseases once were. They explore the nascent political backlash to anti-vaccine messaging and how groups like Grandparents for Vaccines are using personal stories to reach people when facts alone arent enough.

(14,343 posts)I've said this before and will say it again. My mom nearly died of whooping cough when she was 2. She was a surprise baby of her parents and was therefore pretty cherished. Anyway, she heard that story and it made a big impression on her. You best believe we got every vaccine there was when we were growing up, ON TIME. She fretted when my 5-year-old smallpox vaccine didn't "take" until the doctor assured her that it meant I already was immune and had strong immunities. We got the Salk polio vaccine as soon as out doctor had it. I took the Sabin vaccine along with my then-boyfriend's family later. My kids got every vaccine available to them as soon as they could but still got chickenpox because there was no vaccine then. I have already preached the shingles vaccine to them (my oldest will be 54 in July) and AFAIK my grandkids are all vaccinated.

(894 posts)Is someone's unvacinated kid passing measles to another kid with a compromised immune system or who otherwise can't get vaccinated.

(81,072 posts)Years ago, my mother's best friend was pregnant and exposed to kids with measles.
Her baby was born deaf.

(87 posts)Access to the internet has really ramped up manifestations of confirmation bias. Searching for confirmation of what you already believe is the opposite of research. Oh, looky here, this college professor says masks don't work. What's that? You say his expertise is in geology? Note: this is an actual example from the early days of COVID-19.

(24,711 posts)bear with me for two stories.
1) My mom was born in Germany in 1933...in the mid forty's she came down with polio. She was one of the lucky ones. She survived, but the toes on her right foot were fused together..she felt weak for much of her life.
2) I was born in a German hospital in 1957. Sanitary conditions etc, still weren't what they should have been. I was infected with the 21 day measles as an infant. It gacve me encephalitis. I spent 6 months in the hospital. I was one of the very lucky ones. I did not die as most infants back then did when getting encephalitis. What it did was for all of my childhood, I was physically behind my peers. I was hyper active and uncoordinated. I could tie my shoes until I was 11 and couldn't ride a bike til I was 9. Finally about my late 20's I felt I had caught up with my peers. But it took almost 30 years. And still I have poor eyesight as a re4sult of that disease.
So YES!!!!!!! get vaccinated!!!

(891 posts)And many others perform research. But, the anti vax, covid denying, conspiracy believing morons think that these millions of scientists and doctors are trying to trick them in some kind of gigantic conspiracy while some podcaster on the internet has the truth (and a miracle cure).
I saw so much BS about herbal cures. Make no mistake, before organic chemistry, all medicines were herbal extracts. The Native Americans and the Europeans both had their herbalists. But, when the pilgrims came here they still died from diseases they had no immunity for. And likewise, the Native Americans had their herbal cures and no immunity to the diseases brought by the Europeans. Herbal remedies can assist in healing and relieve discomfort but they aren't going to stop Cancer, or Covid, or AIDS iespecially not in somebody who is already having a weakened immune system such as edlerly or people who didn't take the best care of their health.

(25,840 posts)people tried to protect pregnant women and infants from those diseases. They knew that exposure during pregnancy could harm the fetus and exposure to infants could kill them or leave a lasting effect.
But they intentionally exposed children around age 6, especially girls, in order to give them immunity prior to pregnancy.
I had one older cousin and a friend my age who were deaf as a result of measles. Both of them had mothers who caught measles when pregnant.
I had measles, chicken pox, and mumps before first grade. Everyone thought it was a good thing that I had developed immunity and had no lasting effects from the diseases other than two pockets marks, one just above my eyebrow and the other on my nose. Neither one is very visible.

(2,565 posts)My sibs escaped unscathed, but not me. Measles messed up my eyesight permanently. A poll might be interesting...how many people on this forum have had the childhood diseases?
