The top Democrats in the US Congress, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, faced backlash on Saturday over what critics described as tepid, equivocal responses to President Donald Trumps illegal assault on Iranand for slowwalking efforts to prevent the war before the bombing began. While both Democratic leaders chided Trump for failing to seek congressional authorization and not adequately briefing lawmakers on the details of Saturdays attacks, neither offered a full-throated condemnation of a military assault that has killed hundreds so far, including dozens of children, and hurled the Middle East into chaos.
Schumer (D-NY)who infamously worked to defeat the 2015 nuclear deal that Trump later abandoned during his first White House term, setting the stage for the current crisissaid he implored US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to be straight with Congress and the American people about the objectives of these strikes and what comes next. Iran must never be allowed to attain a nuclear weapon, he added, but the American people do not want another endless and costly war in the Middle East when there are so many problems at home.
Jeffries (D-NY), a beneficiary of AIPAC campaign cash, said in his response to the massive US-Israeli assault that Iran is a bad actor and must be aggressively confronted for its human rights violations, nuclear ambitions, support of terrorism, and the threat it poses to our allies like Israel and Jordan in the region. The Trump administration must explain itself to the American people and Congress immediately, provide an ironclad justification for this act of war, clearly define the national security objective, and articulate a plan to avoid another costly, prolonged military quagmire in the Middle East, said Jeffries.
The Democratic leaders responses bolstered the view that their objections to Trumps attack on Iran are based on procedure, not opposition to war. Claire Valdez, a New York state assemblymember who is running for Congress, said that as we plunge headlong into another catastrophic war, Sen. Schumer and Rep. Jeffries throat-clearing and process critique only serves Trump and the war machine. Democrats should speak clearly and with one voice: no war, Valdez added.

(7,729 posts)I am ok with the leaders statements in a general context. But read further. The more convincing argument regarding this situation is lack of support for a resolution offered last year that would have required Trump to get Congressional approval before the attack.

(1,457 posts)...and both these men should be able to immediately nip this in the bud by talking about the absurdity of people who aren't facing the rockets and shells to talk about other people being "cowardly". "Congress has a constitutionally proscribed role in our government, and part of that is to not allow any president to simply put our military in danger on whims and questionable reasons. This administration has not shown itself to be trustworthy to any degree in matters big or small, so it's even more important that they be held to account. It's our job to do what we can to keep Americans from dying on the basis of a lie".

(5,287 posts)Congress to vote on this, but Johnson has been blocking it for over a week.
The only thing this is doing is what these same people have been doing, dividing Democrats, and giving republicans full control of Congress, and two terms of a psychopath in the White House.
Typical divisive bullshit.
We are coming up to midterms, and it never fails.
Maybe we can add the Matt Taibi, Glenn Greenwalds, Jill Steins, etc. into that mix and see if this helps us win the midterms.
We are in this situation because NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE VOTED FOR VP HARRIS with the same detractors who always seem to make their entrance at critical times. 2000, 2016, and 2024.

(71,531 posts)more important...I wonder why. I have found Jeffries to be a big disappointment...both seem to to have a desire to work with the Evil GOP...I don't. And Jeffries faces a primary this year. Any Democrat that votes for this war needs to be primaried as soon as possible. They do not represent us as they should.

Just because you don't have the votes to stop something doesn't mean you should stand by and say nothing.

That is a dirty lie. PIGGY DID THIS. He destroyed President Obama's nuclear deal with Iran because he's a bottomless pit of racist hate, worthlessness and corrupt filth.

(40,307 posts)So far, I dont see any indication of that happening. A sign that an overwhelming majority dont think it important enough to make an effort.

(13,895 posts)Referring to Schumer as having done something "infamously" is clearly bashing.
Pointing out Jeffries getting "campaign cash" is both disrespectful and clearly bashing.

(13,895 posts)I'm just pointing out that you're raising ire against our two leaders in Congress. I'm a liberal. I live freedom of speech.
I will say I think it's a bad idea to attack our two main elected leaders as they try to work their way through a difficult situation. We're not going to be able to get good leaders if we keep jumping their cases after every word they say.
