Tom Pritzker’s long-standing relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein is shining a harsh light on the billionaire’s lifestyle, but also revealing his sometimes strained relationship with his extended family.

Pritzker announced last week that he would retire as executive chairman of Hyatt Hotels Corp., the company that’s a core part of his family’s vast fortune, after the extent of his ties to Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell surfaced in a trove of millions of files released by the Department of Justice. Pritzker, 75, said in a statement at the time that he “exercised terrible judgment in maintaining contact with them” and regrets his actions.

The correspondence, spanning at least nine years, showed how Pritzker and Epstein conversed about travel schedules and dinner meetings, as well as at least one invitation to Epstein’s private Caribbean island. On more than one occasion, Epstein appears to have stayed at Hyatt hotels through Pritzker’s connections, and sought out Pritzker to help find a job at one of the company’s London hotels for a Romanian girl “that you met at my house.”

Pritzker was named in a 2016 deposition by Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein’s victims, who claimed she had sex with the billionaire while allegedly being trafficked by Epstein and Maxwell. Pritzker has consistently denied the accusation. In a Feb. 16 letter to Hyatt investors, he condemned Epstein’s and Maxwell’s actions and said he felt “deep sorrow for the pain they inflicted on their victims.”
